Energy harvesting studies are widely conducted with piezoelectric material nowadays. In order to harvest energy by piezoelectric materials, these materials are attached to the vibrating structures. It is aimed to maximize the harvested energy by using different type and geometry of piezoelectric materials. When piezoelectric materials are structurally coupled and placed at the maximum strain locations on a host structure, harvested energy can be increased. In this study, locations of the piezoelectric materials on the fin like structure which is the integral part of an air vehicle are investigated via finite element method. Moreover, harvested energy of both piezoceramic (BM 500, Sensortech) and micro fiber composite (MFC, Smart Material) piezoelectric materials attached to the fin like structures are also analyzed by experimental techniques.

Investigation of structural and electrochemical properties of biomass based activated carbon materials for energy storage applications
Köse, Kadir Özgün; Aydınol, Mehmet Kadri; Department of Metallurgical and Materials Engineering (2017)
Finding new energy sources and efficient ways for energy storage is one of the primary goals in both scientific and industrial research. To achieve this purpose, studies are concentrated on optimizing the characteristics of energy storage devices such as batteries, fuel cells and supercapacitors. Activated carbon (AC), beside its versatile application areas including wastewater and gas treatment, is used as electrodes in electrical double layer capacitors and as cathode in metal air batteries due to its hig...
Design, analysis and experimental verification of a piezoelectric vortex energy harvester
Avşar, Ahmet Levent; Şahin, Melin; Department of Aerospace Engineering (2016)
In recent days, alternative energy resources are discussed as an important topic for different applications, therefore an extensive study is conducted for the sustainable and renewable energy resources. The importance of the sustainable and renewable energy resources is also increased due to the fossil fuels usage and environmental pollution. For this reason, techniques for obtaining alternative energy resources, such as from sun and wind, are developed rapidly. Moreover, the energy loss during the operatio...
Rebound effects for households’ energy efficient vehicles
Yüksel, Dilan.; Sarı, Ramazan; Department of Earth System Science (2019)
Energy efficiency is one of the most critical dimensions in energy consumption and the technologies improving energy efficiency thus decreasing energy demand as well as greenhouse gases have been becoming widespread in recent years. On the other hand, the fact that the savings owing to the improvements in energy efficiency would not happen as expected indicates a phenomenon which has been being addressed for a long a time in the literature and practice: Rebound Effect. This concept emphasizes that the cost ...
Energy harvesting from piezoelectric stacks via impacting beam
Özpak, Yiğit; Çalışkan, Mehmet; Department of Mechanical Engineering (2014)
Piezoelectric materials can be used for energy harvesting from ambient vibration due to their high power density and ease of application. Two basic methods, namely, tuning the natural frequency to the operational frequency and increasing the operation bandwidth of the harvester are commonly employed to maximize the energy harvested from piezoelectric materials. Majority of the studies performed in recent years focus mostly on tuning the natural frequency of the harvester. However, small deviations in operat...
A Feasibility study for external control on self-organized production of plasmonic enhancement interfaces for solar cells
Zolfaghari Borra, Mona; Bek, Alpan; Ünalan, Hüsnü Emrah; Department of Micro and Nanotechnology (2013)
The present study is about the improvement of the energy conversion efficiency of solar cells in which plasmonic light-trapping approach has been investigated. In this study, metal nanoparticles are allowed to form in a self-organized fashion on both flat and textured full scale monocrystalline silicon solar cell. These metal nanoparticles with strong optical interaction cross-sections at localized plasmonic resonance energies, improve coupling of the incoming light into the active area of solar cells by wa...
