Geotechnical reconnaissance findings of the October 30 2020, Mw7.0 Samos Island (Aegean Sea) earthquake
Ziotopoulou, Katerina; et. al. (2022-11-01)
On October 30, 2020 14:51 (UTC), a moment magnitude (Mw) of 7.0 (USGS, EMSC) earthquake occurred in the Aegean Sea north of the island of Samos, Greece. Turkish and Hellenic geotechnical reconnaissance teams were deployed immediately after the event and their findings are documented herein. The predominantly observed failure mechanism was that of earthquake-induced liquefaction and its associated impacts. Such failures are presented and discussed together with a preliminary assessment of the performance of ...
Geotechnical characteristics and empirical geo-engineering relations of the South Pars Zone marls, Iran
Azarafza, Mohammad; Ghazifard, Akbar; Akgün, Haluk; Asghari-Kaljahi, Ebrahim (2019-12-10)
This paper evaluates the geotechnical and geo-engineering properties of the South Pars Zone (SPZ) marls in Assalouyeh, Iran. These manly beds mostly belong to the Aghajari and Mishan formations which entail the gray, cream, black, green, dark red and pink types. Marls can be observed as rock (soft rock) or soil. Marlstone outcrops show a relatively rapid change to soils in the presence of weathering. To geotechnically characterise the marls, field and laboratory experiments such as particle-size distributio...
Geotechnical characterization and rock mass classification of the Antalya karstic rock masses
Sopacı, Evrim; Akgün, Haluk; Department of Geological Engineering (2012)
This thesis identifies the geotechnical parameters of the Antalya karstic foundation rocks (travertine/tufa), which are highly variable in nature, by means of geological observations, geotechnical site investigations, and field and laboratory geomechanics tests to examine karstic (mainly tufa) rock mass behavior. Several geotechnical parameters such as porosity, seismic wave velocity, uniaxial compressive strength, Young’s modulus, tensile strength, etc. that are thought to have significant influence on roc...
Geotechnical characteristics of residual soils in rainfall-triggered landslides in Rize, Turkey
Üyetürk, Celal Emre; Huvaj Sarıhan, Nejan; Bayraktaroğlu, Hilmi; Huseyinpasaoglu, Mustafa (Elsevier BV, 2020-01-01)
© 2019 Elsevier B.V.Every year, hundreds of landslides are triggered by rainfall in the city of Rize, northern Turkey, resulting in casualties and devastating social and economic consequences. Although these landslides have been observed every year, for a long time in Rize, there is limited data on characteristics of these soils in the literature. Characterizing these soils is of paramount importance for numerical modeling of the landslide mechanisms, for stabilization works, for landslide susceptibility ma...
Geotechnical engineering education in METU and computer aided learning resources
Çokça, Erdal (2008-06-04)
In this paper, the state-of-practice in undergraduate geotechnical engineering (Soil Mechanics and Foundation Engineering) education in the Department of Civil Engineering of the Middle East Technical University (METU CE) is given. The use of computers in undergraduate courses is becoming a more widespread form of teaching in geotechnical engineering education. This paper also presents a list of web resources (e.g. PC Programs, web-based resources, cd-rom resources) currently available in geotechnical engin...
