Effect of geometry on the mechanisms for off-bottom solids suspension in a stirred tank
Ayrancı Tansık, İnci; Madej, Adam M.; Derksen, Jos J.; Nobes, David S.; Kresta, Suzanne M. (2012-09-10)
This paper probes solids suspension mechanisms in stirred tanks. The hypothesis is that at the point where solids are just suspended a critical flow condition exists close to the bottom of the tank for a fixed solids content and similar geometries. The critical flow condition may be dominated by the turbulence or by the mean flow. Two Lightnin A310 impellers with diameters of D=T/3 and D=T/2 were tested at varying off-bottom clearances. The mean and the turbulent fluctuating velocities close to the bottom o...
Effect of austempering parameters on the mechanical charecteristics of ductile cast iron

Effect of hydraulic parameters on the formation of vortices at intake structures
Baykara, Ali; Göğüş, Mustafa; Köken, Mete; Department of Civil Engineering (2013)
The aim of this experimental study was to investigate the hydraulic conditions at which air-entraining vortices would form in front of horizontal intakes and to determine the ways of eliminating the formation of these vortices by testing anti-vortex devices. For these reasons, a series of experiments were conducted in an experimental setup composed of a reservoir having the dimensions of 3.10 m x 3.10 m x 2.20 m and a pump connected to the intake pipe. Within the reservoir, between the concrete side walls a...
Effect of annealing on the mechanical properties of pla parts produced by fused filament fabrication
Aydın, Sencer; Özerinç, Sezer; Department of Micro and Nanotechnology (2021-9-01)
Additive manufacturing has become a disruptive technology for the production of load bearing components in a wide range of applications. Fused filament fabrication (FFF) is among the most effective and economical techniques for the printing of polymeric parts. There are numerous thermoplastic materials suitable for FFF. Among these, Polylactic acid (PLA) is a renewable, sustainable and cost-effective alternative. For better utilization of PLA parts produced by FFF, there is a need to understand the structur...
Effect of chemistry and structure on voltage of Li intercalation oxides
Aydınol, Mehmet Kadri; Kohan, A.f. (1997-01-01)
With the aid of today's powerful computers, quantum mechanical methods are becoming accurate enough to determine the properties of materials before going into laborious and expensive synthesis processes. These `computer experiments' do not require any input other than the atomic numbers of the constituent species. In addition, they allow full control over the `experimental' parameters. In this way the effect of any parameter on the materials properties can be investigated, which is usually not possible in t...
