Backflow oil transfer in internal combustion engines
Karkaç, Abdullah; Dursunkaya, Zafer; Department of Mechanical Engineering (2002)
Oil transport through the cylinder piston route has important implications in internal combustion engines. The amount of oil available affects power loss due to friction, wear of cylinder components and piston ring performance. On the other hand, it has been shown that engine oil contributes to burned and unburned hydrocarbon emissions. In this study, the flow of gas and oil through the ring end gaps were modelled. The pressure in the 2nd and 3rd inter-ring land space volumes, the gas mass flow rates at 1st...
Design, construction and testing of a computerized ignition circuit for an internal combustion engine
Çakmak, Nevzat; Bayka, Ahmet Demir; Department of Mechanical Engineering (2012)
In this study, an ignition unit was designed and constructed for a new design engine with eight cylinders and sixteen pistons. The ignition coils with two high voltage outputs were used to ignite sixteen spark plugs on the system. They were driven by PIC16F628A based igniter circuits triggered with digital signals. The igniter circuits receive ignition signals in a square wave form from a main control circuit; they open or close primary voltage of the induction coils to ignite spark plugs. This main control...
Computer modeling of blowback oil consumption in internal engines
Bilge, Egemen; Dursunkaya, Zafer; Department of Mechanical Engineering (2009)
Environmental pollution is an important problem of our world. Governments are aware of this problem and emission regulations are continuously improved. One of the strictest regulations is about unburned and burned hydrocarbon emissions. In internal combustion engines the origin of the burned and unburned hydrocarbons is fuel and engine oil. As a result of the sanctions and the necessity of improved combustion performance of the engine, manufacturers work on manufacturing technology and engine tribology. Wit...
Experimental investigation of an oil loss mechanism in internal combustion engines
Sezer, Ahmet; Dursunkaya, Zafer; Department of Mechanical Engineering (2010)
Oil loss mechanisms in internal combustion engines have been subject to many researches. By the help of technological developments effects of several problems due to oil losses were examined and tried to be reduced. Environmental pollution and performance loss are important issues that oil consumption in internal combustion engines contribute. In this study the effects of individual parameters on the oil accumulation in 2nd land crevice of internal combustion engines, volume between top compression rings, w...
