A robust design optimization of a mixed-flow compressor impeller

2009-06-08
This paper presents the results of a design and optimization study for the impeller of a small mixed-flow compressor. The objective of the optimization is to obtain an impeller geometry that could minimize a cost function based on the specific thrust and the thrust specific fuel consumption (TSFC) of a small jet engine. The design methodology is based on generating a configurational database for various compressor geometries using ID design codes and a commercial turbomachinery design/analysis software, application of Design of Experiments to properly sample the design space, representing the cost function variations within the design space through a neural-network and then finding the optimum configuration that minimizes the cost function. A sample design optimization study showed that the designed compressor as well as the engine that it's designed for have improved performance characteristics when compared to a typical small turbojet engine and its small radial compressor.

A tunable multi-band metamaterial design using micro-split SRR structures

This paper presents the results of a feasibility study for the design of multi-band tunable metamaterials based on the use of micro-split SRR (MSSRR) structures. In this study, we have designed and constructed a conventional split-ring resonator (SRR) unit cell (type A) and two modified SRR unit cells having the same design parameters except that they contain two (type B) or four (type C) additional micro-splits on the outer square ring, along the arm having the main split. Transmission characteristics of t...
Design and optimization of nanooptical couplers based on photonic crystals involving dielectric rods of varying lengths
Yazar, Şirin; Ergül, Özgür Salih (2022-1-01)
This study presents design and optimization of compact and efficient nanooptical couplers involving photonic crystals. Nanooptical couplers that have single and double input ports are designed to obtain efficient transmission of electromagnetic waves in desired directions. In addition, these nanooptical couplers are cascaded by adding one after another to realize electromagnetic transmission systems. In the design and optimization of all these nanooptical couplers, the multilevel fast multipole algorithm, w...

Göksoy Kalaycılar, Eda; Batun, Sakine; Department of Industrial Engineering (2020-11)
In this thesis, we study a Stochastic Disassembly Line Balancing Problem (SDLBP) with hazardous tasks. We define success and failure events for each hazardous task and describe several scenarios over all hazardous tasks. Our aim is to maximize expected profit over all scenarios. We construct mathematical model with one, two and three hazardous tasks. Then, general formulation both in nonlinear and linear form is studied. We test the performance of the model on randomly generated data using the networks take...
A parametric modeling study on distributed MEMS transmission lines

This paper presents a parametric study of a new model for the distributed MEMS transmission line (DMTL) structures. In this new model, the MEMS bridges which are used as the loading elements of the DMTL structures are represented as low-impedance transmission lines, rather than a lumped CLR circuit. The model also includes LC networks at the transition points from the MEMS bridges to the unloaded parts of the DMTL which are simply high-impedance transmission lines. These LC networks are employed to model th...
