The current study is an effort to better understand the viscous flow physics existing near helicopter blade tips at various angle of attack positions. A planar particle image velocimeter (PIV) was successfully integrated into the helicopter blade tip flow measurement system in a model hover stand The current study utilizes a 1200 mm (47.24 in) diameter scaled helicopter rotor blade system with a 'collective pitch control' capability for flow field measurements. Downwash and upwash behavior at the sections on the blade, and re-circulatory flow behavior near near the tip section are investigated. The specific issues related to the PIV technique used are discussed. The flow characteristics for 5 pitch case looks like a mirror image of the characteristics for -5 pitch case since the airfoil shape is very close to a symmetrical airfoil. The flow field is found to be relatively symmetric on upper and lower surfaces of the blade when pitch is 0. Lift is produced at positive pitch case, which leads to a downwash motion in the region by the trailing edge. Similar flow characteristics are observed for negative and positive pitches at different sections away form the tip, but the upwash motion of the flow is more dominant for negative pitch.

Swing up and stabilization of rotary inverted pendulum by using on-off type of cold gas thruster actuators
Silik, Yusuf; Yaman, Ulaş; Department of Mechanical Engineering (2019)
In this study, swing up and stabilization of on/off type of cold gas thruster driven inverted pendulum is accomplished. First, pulse width modulator (PWM) design method is generated to obtain quasi-linear thrust output from on/off type of thruster. Than, single axis angle controller is designed. Designed angle controller and PWM scheme are tested and verified on single axis angle control test setup. Finally, an other freedom is attached to single axis test setup and rotary inverted pendulum (Furuta Pendulum...
Flow characterization of full, partial, and inclined ground effect
Koçak, Göktuğ; Yavuz, Mehmet Metin; Nalbantoğlu, Volkan; Department of Mechanical Engineering (2016)
Flight condition of helicopters proximity to the ground, so-called “Ground Effect”, is among one of the most recent research areas since the aerodynamic performance of these vehicles significantly vary due to the flow dynamics associated with the interaction between the rotor and the surface. Thus, a comprehensive understanding of the rotor wake during in and out of ground effect is needed to improve the flight performance. Helicopters operate in ground effect in many different ways including full ground, p...
Critical Angle and Fundamental Frequency of Symmetric Airfoils at Low Reynolds Numbers
Kurtuluş, Dilek Funda (2022-05-01)
The unsteady vortex evolution of NACA 0012 airfoil is numerically investigated at low angles of attack ranging from 0 degrees to 10 degrees where the separation is performed from the trailing edge. The Reynolds number ranges between 1000 and 4000. The laminar separation bubble at the trailing edge is observed and the main flow features are presented. It is found that, the increase of the angle of attack and Reynolds number result higher lift to drag ratio by an extensive decrease of the drag coefficient bel...
Laser sheet visualization for flapping motion in hover
Kurtuluş, Dilek Funda; Farcy, Alain; Alemdaroglu, Nafiz (American Institute of Aeronautics and Astronautics Inc.; 2006-12-01)
The aim of the present study is to understand the aerodynamics phenomena and the vortex topology of the highly unsteady flapping motion. Instead of the use of real insect/bird wing geometries and motions which are highly complex and difficult to imitate by an exact modeling, a simplified model is used to understand the unsteady aerodynamics and vortex formation during the different phase of the flapping motion.
Flow Around Helicopter Blade Tip Sections Using a 3D Stereoscopic Particle Image Velocimeter Part II
Kahveci, Harika Senem (null; 2006-12-01)
The present investigation deals with the detailed aerodynamic flow near a rotating helicopter rotor blade. Three-component velocity measurements using a Stereoscopic Particle Image Velocimetry system reveal the details of the near tip flow at various blade angle-of-attack values. The instantaneous flow in selected planes that are almost normal to the rotor blade tips is measured in a phaselocked manner as observed from the stationary frame. A model helicopter with a two-bladed rotor is utilized for experime...
