Perspective-n-Point (PnP) problem is the estimation of the pose (location and orientation) of a calibrated camera from 3D-2D point correspondences, that is, three-dimensional coordinates of objects in a world coordinate system and corresponding pixels in two-dimensional images. PnP algorithms are used in computer vision, augmented reality, robotics, photogrammetry etc. Distribution of the points in the image and the accuracy of the 3D information are important on the accuracy of the estimated pose of the camera. In this paper, keypoints with previously known coordinates and keypoints detected in images taken from a drone are matched. Then, the robustness of PnP algorithms is investigated by adding mismatched keypoints into the true matches. In addition, the effect of the distribution of the points in the image is investigated. The entire study was carried out using high-resolution orthophotos. Direct Linear Transformation (DLT), Efficient PnP (EPnP), LHM and Robust PnP (RPnP) were tested as pose estimation algorithms. As a result, it is observed that the RPnP and LHM algorithms performed better than the other pose estimation algorithms when mismatched keypoints are added. It is also observed that RPnP and LHM give accurate results when the distance error (between the true match and the false match) is increased. RPnP has an advantage over LHM in terms of computational cost. In the case of homogeneous distribution of keypoints, it is observed that PnP algorithms estimate more accurate position and orientation than in the case of nonhomogeneous distribution.

A comparative study on pose estimation algorithms using visual data
Çetinkaya, Güven; Alatan, Abdullah Aydın; Department of Electrical and Electronics Engineering (2012)
Computation of the position and orientation of an object with respect to a camera from its images is called pose estimation problem. Pose estimation is one of the major problems in computer vision, robotics and photogrammetry. Object tracking, object recognition, self-localization of robots are typical examples for the use of pose estimation. Determining the pose of an object from its projections requires 3D model of an object in its own reference system, the camera parameters and 2D image of the object. Mo...
Experimental study on the sensitivity of autocalibration to projective camera model parameters
Hassanpour, Reza; Atalay, Mehmet Volkan (2006-04-01)
Existing methods of 3-D object modeling and recovering 3-D data from uncalibrated 2-D images are subject to errors introduced by assumptions about camera parameters and mismatches in finding point pairs in the images. In this study, we experimentally evaluate the effect of each of these assumptions together with the inaccuracy in the measurements in the images. Sensitivity of reconstruction errors to inaccuracies in the estimation of camera parameters and mismatches due to noise in input data is measured us...
Analysis of Alternative Performance Metrics for Compressive Spectral Imaging
Gundogan, Utku; Öktem, Sevinç Figen (null; 2020-10-07)
Compressive spectral imaging is a technique that reconstructs the three-dimensional (3D) spectral data cube from limited number of two-dimensional (2D) measurements. In order to obtain this data cube, the technique makes use of the theory of compressed sensing, and employs both an optical and a computational system. However, this optical system can be designed with multiple variations. To evaluate the performance of different designs, there is a need for metrics that are reliable and fast to compute. Curren...
Investigation of nonplanar perfectly matched absorbers for finite-element mesh truncation
Kuzuoğlu, Mustafa (1997-03-01)
In this paper, we present a detailed theoretical and numerical investigation of the perfectly matched layer (PML) concept as applied to the problem of mesh truncation in the finite-element method (FEM), We show that it is possible to extend the Cartesian PML concepts involving half-spaces to cylindrical and spherical geometries appropriate for closed boundaries in two and three dimensions by defining lossy anisotropic layers in the relevant coordinate systems, By using the method of separation of variables,...
