It is a well-known fact that Turkey is on a seismically active region. In order to kick-off structural dynamics research in TOBB Economy and Technology University which would focus on improving earthquake response of structures, an experimental earthquake simulation setup and a three floor building model is created as a senior year graduation project. There were two main parts of the study; the first part is the design and integration of components of an earthquake simulation system. The second part is the analysis and design of a three floor building model (scale ∼1/10) with its first natural frequency close to an actual residential three floor reinforced concrete building. After manufacturing of the building model the natural frequencies of the test model is measured and compared with the finite element model predictions. The earthquake testing of the model attached to the hydraulic piston is also performed. The hydraulic piston movement is measured with an LVDT and the building floor sways are measured using an accelerometer. Also, a simple cantilever type of tuned dynamic vibration absorber is placed on the third floor and the effectiveness of the tuned dynamic vibration absorber on decreasing building floor accelerations will be measured.

Turkey is one of the most earthquake-prone countries in Europe. In the past, many destructive earthquakes occurred in Turkey, in which numerous historical structures were damaged seriously or even collapsed. In spite of the high seismic hazard in Turkey, unfortunately there exists no technical document regarding the seismic assessment and rehabilitation of historical structures. Considering this issue, efforts to prepare an advisory guideline document for architects and engineers regarding seismic risk asse...
Capacity related properties and assessment of school buildings in Turkey
Kalem, İlker; Yakut, Ahmet; Department of Civil Engineering (2010)
Turkey is located on a seismically active region. Heavy damage observed in school buildings during recent earthquakes, revealed that seismic performance of school buildings is considerably poor. Therefore, determination of seismic vulnerability of these buildings has gained significant attention. Capacity curves that reflect properties of buildings are used to determine the seismic demand, thus, a decision can be made about the expected performance of the buildings. In addition, seismic vulnerability assess...
GEOCHEMICAL CHARACTER OF THE HYDROTHERMAL ALTERATION ZONES AROUND THE MADENKOY-SIIRT MASSIVE SULFIDE DEPOSIT AND IMPLICATIONS FOR GEOCHEMICAL-EXPLORATION
ERLER, A (Elsevier BV, 1989-04-01)
The Madenkoy-Siir region lies in southeastern Anatolia, Turkey to the northeast of Siirt. The study area is in the southeastern Anatolian Thrust Belt, which forms the boundary between the Border Folds on the northern edge of the Arabian plate and the Taurids. In the region, limestones of the Midyat Group of Eocene-Miocene age and alternating marls and sandstones of the Lice Formation of Early-Middle Miocene age are the autochthonous units. Three thrust slices were emplaced over the autochthonous units durin...
Evaluation of the best management practices to control agricultural diffuse pollution in lake mogan watershed with swat model
Özcan, Zeynep; Alp, Emre; Kentel Erdoğan, Elçin; Department of Environmental Engineering (2016)
Lake Mogan which is located in Gölbaşı County, Ankara, Turkey is one of the most important wetlands of Turkey and it was declared as Special Environmental Protection Region in 1990. Total area of semi-arid Lake Mogan watershed is 970 km2 and dry farming is practiced approximately in 40% of the basin. Therefore, agricultural diffuse source pollution is a serious concern in the watershed. In the context of this thesis, the effects of implementation of different agricultural best management practices on sedime...
