Computer-assisted design methodology for bridge scour counter measures
Yıldırım, Mehmet Sinan; Yanmaz, Ali Melih; Department of Civil Engineering (2013)
Scour at bridge piers is considered as a significant safety hazard. Hence, scour countermeasure design plays a critical role to hinder the scour potential at bridges. The selection methodology for a scour countermeasure varies with respect to site conditions, economy, availability of material and river characteristics. The aim of this study is to review the literature on this topic to gather universally accepted design guidelines. A user-friendly computer program is developed for decision-making in various ...
Developing recommendation techniques for location based social networks using random walk
Bağcı, Hakan; Karagöz, Pınar; Department of Computer Engineering (2015)
The location-based social networks (LBSN) enable users to check-in their current location and share it with other users. The accumulated check-in data can be employed for the benefit of users by providing personalized recommendations. In this thesis, we propose three recommendation algorithms for location-based social networks. These are random walk based context-aware location (CLoRW), activity (RWCAR) and friend (RWCFR) recommendation algorithms. All the algorithms consider the current context (i.e. curre...
Reliability-based analysis of time-dependent scouring at bridge abutments
Kerpiççii Kara , Sibel; Yanmaz, Ali Melih; Department of Civil Engineering (2009)
Deterministic scour prediction equations for bridge abutments do not involve uncertainties coming from scouring parameters and they only consider effects of hydraulic parameters. However, in order to safely design bridge abutments, treatment of these uncertainties and evaluation of possible risks are required. Two artificial neural network (ANN) models are constructed to describe scouring phenomenon using the parameters of two different equations. The equation to be used in the reliability analysis is then ...
Kayraktepe dam and HEPP, environmentally acceptable alternative solution
Sever, Özgür; Tiğrek, Şahnaz; Department of Civil Engineering (2010)
In this study, alternative solution of Kayraktepe Dam is investigated. Kayraktepe Dam was planned more than 30 years ago, but due to various reasons the construction could not be realized. In this study, an alternative feasible formulation was developed. Former Kayraktepe Dam was planned for multiple objectives: flood control, energy generation and water supply for irrigation. The newly developed formulation was designed to meet these objects as well.
Synthesis of a new conducting polymer based on functionalized anthracene and its uses as an electrochromic device component
Yıldırım, Ayşe Gül; Toppare, Levent Kamil; Department of Chemistry (2008)
2,3-Dihydro-5-(10-(2,3-dihydrothieno[3,4-b][1,4]dioxin-5-yl)anthracen-9-yl)thieno [3,4-b][1,4]dioxine (DTAT) was synthesized via linking 3,4-ethylenedioxy thiophene (EDOT) on anthracene by Stille coupling. Homopolymer P(DTAT) was achieved by electrochemical techniques. The polymer, P(DTAT) was electrosynthesized by anodic oxidation of the corresponding monomer in the presence of 0.1 M LiClO4 as the supporting electrolyte in acetonitrile (ACN) solution. Copolymer of DTAT in the presence of EDOT was synthesiz...
