The purpose of this study is to investigate the effects of the conceptual change text based instruction on ninth grade students’ understanding of ecological concepts, and attitudes toward biology and environment. Participants were 82 ninth grade students in a public high school in the Northwestern Turkey. A treatment was employed over a five-week period with quasi-experimental design. While two classes were called control group, two classes were called experimental group. Each teacher had one control group and one experimental group. Two teaching methods were used and randomly assigned to one class of each teacher. While the control group received traditional instruction, the experimental group received conceptual change texts based instruction. Ecology Concepts Test, Attitude Scale towards Biology and Attitude Scale towards Environment were administered to the participants as pre- and post-tests. Data of interview and observation were also collected to support the study results. The results showed that the effect of the conceptual change texts based instruction was better than the traditional instruction on understanding of ecological concepts. However, there was no statistically significant effect of the treatment on the participants’ attitudes toward biology and environment.

Effectiveness of conceptual change instruction on understanding of heat and temperature concepts
Geban, Ömer (2007-05-01)
This study investigated the differential effects of two modes of instructional program (conceptual change oriented and traditionally designed) and gender difference on students' understanding of heat and temperature concepts, and their attitudes toward science as a school subject. The subjects of this study consisted of 72 seventh grade students from two General Science Classes taking the course from the same teacher. Each teaching method was randomly assigned to one class. The experimental group received r...
Effectiveness of conceptual change text-oriented instruction on students' understanding of cellular respiration concepts
Cakir, Os; Geban, Ömer; Yuruk, N (Wiley, 2002-07-01)
This study investigated the effect of conceptual change text-oriented instruction over traditional instruction on students' understanding of cellular respiration concepts and their attitudes toward biology as a school subject. The sample of this study consisted of 84 eleventh-grade students from four classes of a high school. Two of the classes were assigned randomly to the control group, and the other two classes were assigned randomly to the experimental group. During teaching the topic of cellular respir...
EFFECTIVENESS OF CONCEPTUAL CHANGE INSTRUCTION ON FLUID FORCE TOPIC
Ipekcioglu, S.; Elmas, R.; Geban, Ömer; Yesilyurt, H. (2011-03-09)
The main purpose of the study was to investigate the effectiveness of conceptual change oriented instruction over traditionally designed science instruction on 8th grade students' understanding of fluid force concepts. Participants of the study were fifty five 8th grade students from two classes in a private elementary school. This study is a quasi experimental pretest-posttest control group design. Both groups were administered Fluid Force Concept Achievement Test as pre and post test. Also Logical Thinkin...
Effect of cooperative learning based on conceptual change conditions on seventh grade students' understanding of classification of matter and physical and chemical changes
Erdemir (Özdemir), Arzu; Özgenel, Lale; Department of Secondary Science and Mathematics Education (2006)
The main purpose of this study was to compare the effectiveness of the cooperative learning based on conceptual change conditions and traditionally designed science instruction on 7th grade students̕ understanding of chemical and physical changes and classification of matter concepts and attitudes toward science as a school subject. In this study 102 seventh grade students from four classes of a Science Course instructed by the two teachers from ODTÜ G.V. Özel Ilkögretim Okulu took part. One of the classes ...
Remediating misconceptions concerning chemical bonding through conceptual change text
Pabuçcu, Aybüke; Geban, Ömer (2006-08-01)
The purpose of this study was to explore the effects of conceptual change texts oriented instructionon 9th grade students' understanding of chemical bonding concepts. in this study, the main aim of the preparation of conceptual change texts was to activate students' prior knowledge and misconceptions and to help them to understand the chemical bonding concepts through the use of explanations. analogies and examples. Analogies were used in the conceptual change texts to deal with students' misconceptions mor...
