Results of investigation of copepod fauna in the western Black Sea are obtained in May-June 2001. 49 taxa have been found including 33 taxa that are not of the Black Sea origin. The problem of intensifi cation of process of copepod fauna Mediterranization in the Black Sea basin is discussed.

Estimation of phytoplankton biomass using HPLC pigment analysis in the southwestern Black Sea
Ediger, D.; Soydemir, N.; Kıdeyş, Ahmet Erkan (2006-01-01)
The phytoplankton population of the southwestern Black Sea in May 2001 was studied by taxonomic analysis using microscopic examination and by pigment analyses using high-performance liquid chromatography (HPLC). Pigment data, which identified phytoplankton assemblages dominated by dinoflagellates, diatoms and coccolithophores in May 2001, were compared to phytoplankton cell counts and biomass. There were significant (p < 0.002-0.01, r=0.56-0.67) relationships between the taxon-specific pigment concentration...
Decreased levels of the invasive ctenophore Mnemiopsis in the Marmara Sea in 2001
İşinibilir Okyar, Melek; Tarkan, Ahmet N; Kıdeyş, Ahmet Erkan (null, 2004-01-01)
Mnemiopsis leidyi, an endemic ctenophore of the western Atlantic, was first reported in the Marmara Sea in summer 1992, at an average abundance of 27 ind. m−3. We investigated its abundance and distribution together with that of the mesozooplankton (most species are prey organisms of M. leidyi) at eight stations during August 2001, in order to evaluate recent population developments with regard to the impact of its predator, Beroe cf ovata. The abundance of M. leidyi was found to be quite low (range 0.5–8.8...

The diel vertical distribution of zooplankton in the southeast Black Sea
Erkan, F.; Gücü, Ali Cemal; Zagorodnyaya, J. (2000-01-01)
The diel changes in the vertical distribution of zooplankton in the southeast Black Sea were described in this study. The zooplankton were sampled using two different sampling methods throughout one day in October 1996 and July 1997 at the same station. The zooplankton counts, the length measurements and biomass estimates showed that the zooplankton in the southeast Black Sea is dominated by small organisms, among which Noctiluca scintillans is the dominant species. In the vertical distribution of zooplankt...
Physiological and ecological studies of Calanus euxinus (Hulsemann) from the Black Sea with comments on its life cycle
Arashkevich, E; Svetlichny, L; Gubareva, E; Besiktepe, S; Gücü, Ali Cemal; Kideys, AE (1998-01-01)
Ecological and physiological study of Calanus euxinus population from the Black Sea was carried out during the cruise of RN Bilim in Autumn 1996. The population was divided into two: active individuals, represented by all developmental stages, and diapausing CVs. The active CIV-CVIs underwent daily vertical migrations, while the diapausing CVs stayed at depth all day long. The population seemed to reproduce actively indicated by the large number of eggs and nauplii in the samples as well as the large propor...
