Planning: A Continiuum Of Utopian And Non-Utopian Sensibilities
Barlas, M.Adnan (1992-1-1)
The identification of the origins of the intellectual history as well as the professional practice of planning, either in terms of its conceptual foundations or the chronology of events, takes one back to industrializing Europe and United States of the nineteenth century. In this period one can find both ‘utopian’ and ‘anti-’ or ‘non-’ utopian precursors of professional planning practice and planning theory of the twentieth century. This implies that neither set of precursors is the exclusive impetus behind...
The Justice and Development Party and the Legitimation Crisis
Yalım, Gözde; Özdemir, Yonca; Political Science and International Relations (2020-12)
The main research problem in the thesis is to scrutinise the main reasons for the JDP’s rise to power, establishment and maintenance of its hegemony and in recent years gradual weakening of its legitimacy in the light of Jürgen Habermas’ theory of legitimation crises. The analysis of the JDP rule will inevitably necessitate an investigation of the ways in which the Turkish economy has been integrated into the global economy. By using Jürgen Habermas’ concept of ‘requisite quantity’ and ‘moral identity’ the ...
Differentiation of use and provision strategies of urban parks: an evaluation of parks in urban regeneration projects in Ankara
Tuç, İmral; Balaban, Osman; Department of Urban Policy Planning and Local Governments (2018)
Urbanization strategies have usually been shaped by the historical changes in economic and political discourses in a society. Along with the changing economic and political discourses, powerful groups of the time have also been influential on the strategies that shape urban space. Urban parks, as essential components of urban space, were also affected by changes in economic and political discourses as well as actions of powerful groups. Even though the production strategies and usage purposes of urban parks...
Reading Architectural Utopia(nism)s: A Proposal
Güneri Söğüt, Gizem Deniz (Middle East Technical University, Faculty of Architecture, 2019-01-01)
The writings of urban theorists who have studied utopias that propose a counter-space as the basis for a counter-society go back to very early periods in history. However, works dwelling on the influence of such theoretical constructs on actual space, in forms of architectural outputs per se, are comparably new. Since the revival of the very first theoretical work on the relationship between utopia and architecture, barely a century has passed. During this period, such theory has developed and expanded rapi...
Manipulation of history and language in three dystopias
Ersoy, Duygu; Deveci, Cem; Department of Political Science and Public Administration (2006)
In this study, the manipulations of history and language in the dystopias of “Nineteen Eighty-Four” by George Orwell, “We” by Yevgeni Zamyatin and “Brave New World” by Aldous Huxley are examined. The principal aim of this investigation is to demonstrate that in these imaginary societies absolute stability is achieved through the manipulations of these two domains. The thesis argues that if the domains of history and language are not taken under control, they are to provide the subjects with the standard of ...
