Photoluminescence at 1.53 um from Er: SiN x on silicon photonic crystal cavities was extracted via fiber tapers with 2.5 x greater collection efficiency compared to free space emission. Fibers were also used to demonstrate a 10 nm tuning range of 750 nm SHG emission from GaP cavities.
Tunable integrated optical modulator with dynamical photonic band transition of photonic crystals
GÖVDELİ, ALPEREN; Kocaman, Serdar (2019-01-01)
A Mach-Zehnder Interferometer based optical modulator composed of photonic crystals as phase shifters is presented. The switching process relies on the phase modulation along the arms of interferometer resulted from the photonic band shift of the photonic crystal regions. A small bulk index change leads to a large effective index difference between two arms of the interferometer and a small foot-print device can operate as a modulator. Presented MZI-based optical modulator is shown to have tunable bandwidth...
Adaptive Control of Necklace States in a Photonic Crystal Waveguide

Resonant cavities with high quality factor and small mode volume provide crucial enhancement of light matter interactions in nanophotonic devices that transport and process classical and quantum information. The production of functional circuits containing many such cavities remains a major challenge, as inevitable imperfections in the fabrication detune the cavities, which strongly affects functionality such as transmission. In photonic crystal waveguides, intrinsic disorder gives rise to high-Q localized ...
Nonlinear optical properties of low temperature annealed silicon-rich oxide and silicon-rich nitride materials for silicon photonics
Minissale, S.; Yerci, Selçuk; Dal Negro, L. (2012-01-09)
We investigate the nonlinear optical properties of Si-rich silicon oxide (SRO) and Si-rich silicon nitride (SRN) samples as a function of silicon content, annealing temperature, and excitation wavelength. Using the Z-scan technique, we measure the non-linear refractive index n(2) and the nonlinear absorption coefficient beta for a large number of samples fabricated by reactive co-sputtering. Moreover, we characterize the nonlinear optical parameters of SRN in the broad spectral region 1100-1500 nm and show ...
Tuning of 2D Rod-Type Photonic Crystal Cavity for Optical Modulation and Impact Sensing
Orsel, Ogulcan E.; Erdil, Mertcan; Yanik, Cenk; Kocaman, Serdar (2019-01-01)
We propose a novel way of mechanical perturbation of photonic crystal cavities for on-chip applications. We utilize the equivalence of the 2D photonic crystals with perfect electric conductor (PEC) boundary conditions to the infinite height 3D counterparts for rod type photonic crystals. Designed structures are sandwiched with PEC boundaries above and below and the perturbation of the cavity structures is demonstrated by changing the height of PEC boundary. Once a defect filled with air is introduced, the m...
