Smoking is the source of fundamental health problems. Activities have been organised throughout the world so that smokers and non-smokers do not encounter smoking-related health problems in society. One such activity is the combined health warnings designed to be printed on cigarette packets. The warnings on cigarette packets are considered as an instrument of education to develop the desired attitudes in individuals by improving their knowledge of health. This research aims to evaluate the effects of 14 combined health warnings printed on cigarette packets on smokers and non-smokers. This is a descriptive research, and it employs a correlation model. The research group was composed of 57 individuals participating in the research on the basis of volunteering. The data were collected through eye-tracking and by means of two forms. According to the findings, the combined warnings on cigarette packets were moderately influential and they were remembered at low levels. It was also found that the participants were familiar with the combined warnings on cigarette packets and that they avoided the warnings. These results demonstrate that the warnings should be re-evaluated by taking diverse demographic properties into consideration. © 2016, Scientific Methodical Center. All rights reserved.

Nikcevic, Ana V.; Alma Uzuntuna, Leyla; Marino, Claudia; Kolubinski, Daniel; Yilmaz-Samanci, Adviye Esin; Caselli, Gabriele; Spada, Marcantonio M. (2017-11-01)

The goal of this study was to test a model including nicotine dependence and number of daily cigarettes as dependent variables, anxiety and depression as independent variables, and smoking outcome expectancies and metacognitions about smoking as mediators between the independents and dependents.

Alma Uzuntuna, Leyla; YILMAZ SAMANCI, ADVİYE ESİN (2019-12-01)
The use of tobacco and tobacco products is a leading cause of preventable health problems and results in many deaths. Thus, a better understanding of cigarette use and the mechanisms of addiction would advance the literature. This study aims to explain the addiction to smoking in accordance with the metacognitive approach, which has a current and innovator point of view, and provides evidence that the metacognitive approach might be a novel treatment for smoking dependency. The metacognitive approach has be...

Metacognitions about the positive and negative effects of smoking have been associated with cigarette use and nicotine dependence. The aim of the present study was to validate the Turkish version of the Metacognitions about Smoking Questionnaire (MSQ; Nikcevic et al., 2015). The sample consisted of 859 self-declared smokers (452 female) aged between 18 and 68 years (mean = 28.3; SD = 7.9). Once the English to Turkish translation of the MSQ was completed, confirmatory factor analyses were conducted based on ...
Understanding political priority development for public health issues in Turkey: lessons from tobacco control and road safety
Hoe, Connie; Rodriguez, Daniela C.; Uzumcuoglu, Yesim; Hyder, Adnan A. (Springer Science and Business Media LLC, 2019-02-06)
Tobacco use and road traffic injuries are major public health problems in Turkey. During the last decade, the former issue received political priority in the country, while the latter did not despite the immense health and economic burden that road traffic injuries pose on the Turkish population. Political priority can facilitate the attainment of public health goals. Unfortunately, however, limited cross-case analyses exist to help us understand why it emerges for certain public health issues but fails to ...
