Secondary mathematics teachers’ mathematics related beliefs throughout a professional development program based on mathematical modelling
Ören Vural, Duygu; Çetinkaya, Bülent; Department of Secondary Science and Mathematics Education (2015)
The purpose of this qualitative study is to investigate in-service secondary school mathematics teachers’ mathematics related beliefs, to explore changes in their beliefs after they participated in a one-year professional development program (PDP) based on mathematical modelling as well as teachers’ perception about the effects of PDP on their belief change. Semi-structured interviews and an open-ended analogy questionnaire were the main data sources. Results showed that most of the teachers held more than ...
Relationship between materialism and self-construals
Turan, Gizem; İmamoğlu, Emine Olcay; Department of Psychology (2007)
The aim of the present study was to explore the associations between different types of orientations toward materialism, and to investigate the relationship between materialistic orientations and different self-construal types as suggested by the Balanced Integration and Differentiation (BID) Model (İmamoğlu, 1998, 2003). The sample was consisted of 335 Middle East Technical University students (168 females, 167 males) with a mean age of 21.34. The questionnaire consisted of eight scales that were used to m...
Mathematical ontology the question of the mathematical source of objectivity
Dorrikhteh, Omid; Grünberg, David; Department of Philosophy (2019)
This thesis traces the source of mathematical objectivity, as an approach to justify mathematical properties to be real, through how our mind and language were evolved. In the mirror of the indispensability argument, and the unreasonable effectiveness of mathematics, it will be argued that the reason why the world and the mind exhibit ontologically similar structures (and properties) is because they have the same ontological origin. Accordingly, it will be shown that (1) why/how that “the world and the mind...
Equivariant reduction of matrix gauge theories and emergent chaotic dynamics
Toğa, Göksu Can; Kürkcüoğlu, Seçkin; Department of Physics (2018)
In this thesis we focus on a massive deformation of a Yang-Mills matrix gauge theory. We first layout the essential features of this model including fuzzy 4- sphere extremum of the mass deformed potential as well as its relation with string theoretic matrix models such as the BFSS model. Starting with such a model with U(4N) gauge symmetry, we determine the SU(4) equivariant fluctuations modes. We trace over the fuzzy 4-spheres at the matrix levels N = 1 6(n + 1)(n + 2)(n + 3), (n : 1; 2 : : : 5) and obtain...
