Assessment of tsunami human vulnerability is essential for development of tsunami hazard mitigation strategies especially when the possible affected areas are within a metropolis. The Sea of Marmara has faced tsunami events that are both generated by earthquakes or landslides. Therefore, all the coastal districts of the megacity Istanbul are prone to suffer from tsunami events. Some of the coastal districts of Istanbul have been studied in detailed within the concept of tsunami human vulnerability assessment and the methodology of MeTHuVA (METU Metropolitan Tsunami Human Vulnerability Assessment) is applied and further developed through the application processes (Cankaya et al., 2016 and Tufekci et al., 2017). In this study MeTHuVA methodology is applied to Silivri district, the westernmost and the largest district of Istanbul. Silivri district is located in the northern coast of the Sea of Marmara from 27.98◦E to 28.40◦E. Silivri district of Istanbul is not only a part of metropolitan city, it is also very common summer vacation spot with many beaches, camping areas and many waterfront residences, facilities and hotels. Therefore, tsunami human vulnerability assessment is an inevitable study for Silivri district of Istanbul. High resolution and detailed spatial dataset of Istanbul Metropolitan Municipality (IMM) is used during the procedure of MeTHuVA, which involves GIS-based MCDA applications. The results of MeTHuVA is analyzed with the deterministically defined worst-case scenario results of tsunami numerical tool NAMI DANCE-GPU, in order to calculate the risk level in every location of Silivri district. Results are presented and discussed. Acknowledgements: This paper is supported by Istanbul Metropolitan Municipality under the project number METU-DOSIM-17-03-03-2-02-04. Tsunami risk and strategies for the European region (TRANSFER)
Yalçıner, Ahmet Cevdet(2009-10-30)
The project main goal is to contribute to our understanding of tsunami processes in the Euro-Mediterranean region, to the tsunami hazard and risk assessment and to identifying the best strategies for reduction of tsunami risk. Focus will be posed on the gaps and needs for the implementation of an efficient tsunami early warning system (TEWS) in the Euro-Mediterranean area, which is a high-priority task in consideration that no tsunami early warning system is today in place in the Euro-Mediterranean countrie...
Tsunami hazard in the Eastern Mediterranean and its connected seas: Toward a Tsunami warning center in Turkey
MERAL ÖZEL, NURCAN; Ocal, Necmioglu; Cevdet, Yalciner Ahmet; Dogan, Kalafat; Mustafa, Erdik (Elsevier BV, 2011-04-01)
Tsunami mitigation, preparedness and early warning initiatives have begun at the global scale only after the tragic event of Sumatra in 2004. Turkey, as a country with a history of devastating earthquakes, has been also affected by tsunamis in its past. In this paper we present the Tsunami Hazard in the Eastern Mediterranean and its connected seas (Aegean, Marmara and Black Sea) by providing detailed information on historically and instrumentally recorded significant tsunamigenic events surrounding Turkey, ...
Coastal Tsunami and Risk Assessment for Eastern Mediterranean Countries
Yavuz, Cüneyt; Kentel Erdoğan, Elçin (null; 2017-12-17)
Tsunamis are rarely experienced events that have enormous potential to cause large economic destruction on the critical infrastructures and facilities, social devastation due to mass casualty, and environmental adverse effects like erosion, accumulation and inundation. Especially for the past two decades, nations have encountered devastating tsunami events. The aim of this study is to investigate risks along the Mediterranean coastline due to probable tsunamis based on simulations using reliable historical ...
Comparison of Human Response Against Earthquake and Tsunami
Arıkawa, Taro; Güler, Hasan Gökhan; Yalçıner, Ahmet Cevdet (2017-12-01)
The evacuation response against the earthquake and tsunamis is very important for the reduction of human damages against tsunami. But it is very difficult to predict the human behavior after shaking of the earthquake. The purpose of this research is to clarify the difference of the human response after the earthquake shock in the difference countries and to consider the relation between the response and the safety feeling, knowledge and education. For the objective of this paper, the questionnaire survey wa...
Possible worst-case tsunami scenarios around the Marmara Sea from combined earthquake and landslide sources
Latcharote, Panon; Suppasri, Anawat; Imamura, Fumihiko; Aytore, Betul; Yalçıner, Ahmet Cevdet (2016-12-01)
This study evaluates tsunami hazards in the Marmara Sea from possible worst-case tsunami scenarios that are from submarine earthquakes and landslides. In terms of fault-generated tsunamis, seismic ruptures can propagate along the North Anatolian Fault (NAF), which has produced historical tsunamis in the Marmara Sea. Based on the past studies, which consider fault-generated tsunamis and landslide-generated tsunamis individually, future scenarios are expected to generate tsunamis, and submarine landslides cou...
