Effects of anaerobic digestion on the combustion of sewage sludge
Çelebi, Emrehan Berkay; Aksoy, Ayşegül; Sanin, Faika Dilek (2016-06-10)
Around the world, especially in the developing countries, sludge management is a topic gaining increasing importance, as the number of treatment plants and the people connected to these plants are on the rise. Old approaches seeing sludge as a waste, including landfilling, leave its place for new applications where sludge acts as an energy source or a resource as fertilizer. Combustion or co-combustion of sludge exploits its energy potential while providing stabilization ...
Effects of micro-nano titania contents and maleic anhydride compatibilization on the mechanical performance of polylactide
CAN, ULAŞ; Kaynak, Cevdet (Wiley, 2020-02-01)
The first aim of this study was to compare influences of various contents of the micro- (200 nm) and nano (50 nm)-sized titania (TiO2) particles especially on the mechanical performance of the polylactide (PLA) biopolymer. Micro- and nano-composites were prepared by twin-screw extruder melt mixing, while the specimens were shaped by compression molding. Scanning electron microscope analyses and mechanical tests revealed that due to the most efficient uniform distribution in the matrix, the best improvements...
Effects of frying parameters on the colour development of fried potatoes
Şahin, Serpil (Springer Science and Business Media LLC, 2000-01-01)
The effects of frying time and temperature on the colour development of potatoes during frying was studied. Potato disks 0.025 m in diameter and 0.005 m thick were used. Sunflower oil was used as a frying medium at temperatures 150 degrees C, 160 degrees C, 170 degrees C and 180 degrees C. Colour parameters of Hunter L and b values followed first-order reaction kinetics during frying. The temperature dependence of the rate constants for Hunter L and b values showed good agreement with Arrhenius relation, th...
Effects of gamma irradiation on the survival of Listeria monocytogenes and on its growth at refrigeration temperature in poultry and red meat
Gursel, B; Gültekin, Güzin Candan (Elsevier BV, 1997-12-01)
Gamma irradiation sensitivity of a strain of Listeria monocytogenes was determined in trypticase soy broth supplemented with yeast extract (TSB-YE), in a slurry of chicken breast meat and in raw ground beef. D-10 values in these different media were 0.364, 0.599, and 0.699 kGy, respectively. This organism appeared most sensitive in TSB-YE, more resistant in minced fresh chicken breast meat, and most resistant in fresh minced beef. It was found that irradiation at 2.5 kGy prior to refrigeration is an efficie...
Effects of ultrasound and high pressure on physicochemical properties and HMF formation in Turkish honey types
Onur, Ipek; Mısra, N. N.; Barba, Francisco J.; Putnık, Predrag; Lorenzo, Jose M.; Gökmen, Vural; Alpas, Hami (2018-02-01)
In industrial production, thermal processing of honey at 50 degrees C commonly induces liquefaction, i.e. it reduces the crystal count and viscosity and delays any subsequent crystallization. Unfortunately, thermal treatment can generate toxic 5-hydroxymethylfurfural (HMF), thereby resulting in quality reduction. Considering this, the present work aims at evaluating the influence of (two) processing technologies as alternatives to thermal processing of honey, namely high hydrostatic pressure (HHP; P = 220-3...
