Mining activities focus on the production of mineral resources for energy generation and raw material requirements worldwide and it is a known fact that shallow reserves become scarce. For this reason, exploration of new resources proceeds consistently to meet the increasing energy and raw material demand of industrial activities. Rock mechanics has a vital role in underground mining and surface mining Devices and instruments used in laboratory testing to determine rock mechanics related parameters might have limited sensing capability of the failure behavior. However, methodologies such as, thermal cameras, digital speckle correlation method and acoustic emission might enable to investigate the initial crack formation in detail. Regarding this, in this study, thermographic analysis was performed to analyze the failure behaviors of different types of rock specimens during uniaxial compressive strength experiments. The energy dissipation profiles of different types of rocks were characterized by the temperature difference recorded with an infrared thermal camera during experiments. The temperature increase at the failure moment was detected as 4.45 degrees C and 9.58 degrees C for andesite and gneiss-schist specimens, respectively. Higher temperature increase was observed with respect to higher UCS value. Besides, a temperature decreases of about 0.5-0.6 degrees C was recorded during the experiments of the marble specimens. The temperature change on the specimen is related to release of radiation energy. As a result of the porosity tests, it was observed that increase in the porosity rate from 5.65% to 20.97% can be associated to higher radiation energy released, from 12.68 kJ to 297.18 kJ.

Thermographic analysis of heat generation during ucs testing of rocks
Kırmacı, Alper; Erkayaoğlu, Mustafa; Department of Mining Engineering (2020)
SMining activities concentrate on the production of underground resources for energy generation and raw material requirements worldwide, as it is also the case in Turkey. For this reason, the exploration of new resources proceeds consistently to meet the increasing raw material demand of the industry. Rock mechanics has a vital role in underground mining and surface mining. At present, the devices and instruments used in rock mechanics laboratory testing, for example, uniaxial compressive strength test, hav...
A Discrete Event Simulation and Data-Based Framework for Equipment Performance Evaluation in Underground Coal Mining
Yılmaz, Enver; Erkayaoğlu, Mustafa (2021-01-01)
© 2021, Society for Mining, Metallurgy & Exploration Inc.Coal is still a part of energy generation worldwide and has a significant role in the sustainable development of countries. The amount of shallow coal deposits is getting scarce, making efficient underground mining operations crucial for both local and global economies. In underground mining operations, longwall mining is a commonly utilized method to extract deep coal deposits. One of the leading engineering goals in longwall mining is increasing the...
Use of Geospatial Queries for Optimum Drilling and Blasting Practices in Surface Mining
Erkayaoğlu, Mustafa (2018-11-22)
Increasing demand of the modern society for energy and raw material strengthens the role of mining in sustainable development. The basic production cycle of surface mining is initiated by drilling and blasting the material that will be loaded, hauled, and dumped by various mobile equipment. Performance measurement and analysis of all these production stages by the utilization of available technology is of crucial importance for continuous improvement of modern mine operations. Today, most of the mobile equi...
Investigation of alkaline pretreatment parameters on amulti-product basis for the co-production of glucose and hemicellulose based films from corn cobs
Toraman, Hilal Ezgi; Bakır Bölükbaşı, Ufuk; Özkan, Necati; Department of Chemical Engineering (2012)
There is an increasing trend in the world for using renewable sources of fuels and chemicals due to the continuous depletion of fossil fuel reserves besides the environmental issues related with the exploitation of these resources. Lignocellulosic biomass is seen as the most promising candidate to be used instead of fossil sources because of its availability, relatively low price and less competition with food and feed crops. In this study, corn cobs, a lignocellulosic agricultural waste, were subjected to ...
An approach on dilution and ore recovery / loss calculations in minearal reserve estimations at the Cayeli mine, Turkey
Soyer, Nihat; Güyagüler, Tevfik; Department of Mining Engineering (2006)
Dilution and ore recovery/loss have an important role in calculation of mineral reserves. Each percent increase in dilution and decrease in recovery negatively affects economic value of the reserve. These parameters are mainly controlled by the quality of the mine design and stoping practice. This study provides an approach developed for dilution and recovery/ore loss calculations. The contribution of mine design software (MineSight) and the recent survey technique called Cavity Monitoring System (CMS) were...
