Purpose - This paper aims to provide an overview of the recent findings of the mechanical properties of parts manufactured by fused deposition modeling (FDM). FDM has become a widely used technique for the manufacturing of thermoplastic parts. The mechanical performance of these parts under service conditions is difficult to predict due to the large number of process parameters involved. The review summarizes the current knowledge about the process-property relationships for FDM-based three-dimensional printing.

Mechanical properties of nylon parts produced by fused deposition modeling
Hasçelik, Sabit; Öztürk, Ömer T.; Özerinç, Sezer (2021-01-01)
Fused deposition modeling (FDM) is a widely used additive manufacturing technique for producing polymeric parts. While most commonly used FDM filaments are PLA and ABS, nylon is a widely used thermoplastic polymer in industry. This study investigated the mechanical properties of FDM-produced specimens made of nylon and quantified the effect of process parameters such as raster orientation and nozzle temperature on the mechanical properties. As the nozzle temperature increases, specimens become stronger with...
Mechanical properties of CdZnTe nanowires under uniaxial stretching and compression: A molecular dynamics simulation study
Kurban, Mustafa; Erkoç, Şakir (2016-09-01)
Structural and mechanical properties of ternary CdZnTe nanowires have been investigated by performing molecular dynamics simulations using an atomistic potential. The simulation procedures are carried out as uniaxial stretching and compression at 1 K and 300 K. The results demonstrate that the mechanical properties of CdZnTe ternary nanowires show significantly a dependence on size and temperature under uniaxial stretching and compression.
Magnetic and Structural Analysis of a Transverse Flux Claw Pole Linear Machine
Keysan, Ozan; Mueller, Markus A. (2013-01-01)
This paper details the design and testing of a novel transverse flux claw pole linear machine suitable for large superconducting generators. The machine utilises a modular claw pole transducer design with a stationary field winding which eliminates the need for cryogenic couplers and electrical brushes for a superconducting machine. The results from this prototype will enable a better understanding of the electromagnetic and mechanical structures before embarking on a more costly super-conducting design. Th...
Mechanical behaviour of Al2O3-ZrO2 minicomposite reinforced glass matrix optomechanical composite
Dericioğlu, Arcan Fehmi (Informa UK Limited, 2003-08-01)
To understand the effect of a 'mesh-structured reinforcement' on the optical and mechanical properties of optomechanical composites, a unidirectional Al2O3 fibre-ZrO2 matrix minicomposite reinforced glass matrix optomechanical composite has been fabricated. By regular alignment of the minicomposites in the glass matrix as part of the 'mesh structure' a high degree of optical transparency is obtained in the composite; this transparency is proportional to its 'optical window' regions. The mesh structured rein...
Mechanical behavior of CFRP confined low strength concretes subjected to simultaneous heating-cooling cycles and sustained loading
Erdil, B.; Akyüz, Uğurhan; Yaman, İsmail Özgür (Springer Science and Business Media LLC, 2012-01-01)
This study aims to present the mechanical behavior of carbon fiber reinforced polymers (CFRP) reinforced low strength cylindrical and prism concrete specimens under both heating-cooling cycles and sustained loading. Heating-cooling cycles range from -10 to 50A degrees C and the applied sustained load level is 40% of the ultimate strength of concrete. After 200 heating-cooling cycles and/or sustained load testing, specimens were tested to determine the mechanical behavior under uniaxial compression. The expe...
