In this thesis, a thermionic electron gun generating low emittance and the high power electron beam is designed. The thermionic cathode made of a LaB6 single crystal is chosen as a thermionic emitter because of its properties ensuring high electron beam current in lower temperatures which provide lower emittance. The main goal of the gun design is to achieve a high DC beam current and low emittance. Computer Sim- ulation Technology (CST) and MATLAB are used to design the gun and optimize electrode shapes and corresponding fields. In addition, control and regulation of elec- tron beam current are carried out by a focusing and control electrode in an electron gun at CST. From no current to full current, this current control is provided in every voltage step without increasing the beam’s emittance value. The electron gun is kept under a high voltage DC source which varies between -60kV to -100 kV and DC beam current up to 75 mA. The simulation and test results are presented.

Deposition of carbon by intense fast electron beam generator
Goktas, H; Oke, G; Udrea, M; Esendemir, A (2002-01-01)
The electron beam generator consists of a fast filamentary discharge in superposition with an ordinary glow discharge in low-pressure gases. The filling gas is helium, argon or nitrogen at approximately 0.1 Torr pressure. The duration of the electron beam is shorter than 30 ns and the peak current intensity is typically 20 A. The deposition of carbon on a substrate has been done by two methods; firstly, the low pressure argon gas was replaced by methane gas as a plasma source and, secondly, a graphite targe...
Design Studies of Axial Vircator for High Power Microwave Generation
KÜÇÜK, İBRAHİM SEMİH; TİMUR, BÜŞRA; Tanc, Zafer; Demir, Şimşek (2017-09-27)
This paper presents design and simulation results of the cylindrical axial virtual cathode oscillator which is frequently used to damage electronic equipment by generating High Power Microwaves (HPM). Simulations are performed in MAGIC Tool Suite which uses FDTD-PIC algorithm to solve particle beam and field interactions. During the design procedure, AK Gap is changed from 5 mm to 12 mm and the scaling law is verified by simulation results. 9 mm AK gap values are selected as the most suitable one when outpu...
Design and implementation of an open-source optically stimulated luminescence measurement system
Maraba, Diren; Bulur, Enver; Department of Physics (2017)
Optically Stimulated Luminescence (OSL) is the light emission from an irradiated solid (insulator or a wide band gap semiconductor) upon illumination with light of suitable wavelength. Although the phenomenon has been known for a long time, OSL has emerged as a practically applicable dosimetry technique in the past two decades. Recently introduced materials like alumina and beryllia have found use in the field of radiation dosimetry. The purpose of this study is to design and construct a simple multi-sample...
Improving the laser damage resistance of oxide thin films and multilayers via tailoring ion beam sputtering parameters
Cosar, M. B.; Ozhan, A. E. S.; Aydogdu, G. H. (2015-05-01)
Ion beam sputtering is one of the widely used methods for manufacturing laser optical components due to its advantages such as uniformity, reproducibility, suitability for multilayer coatings and growth of dielectric materials with high packing densities. In this study, single Ta2O5 layers and Ta2O5/SiO2 heterostructures were deposited on optical quality glass substrates by dual ion beam sputtering. We focused on the effect of deposition conditions like substrate cleaning, assistance by 12 cm diameter ion b...
Design, performance, and calibration of the CMS hadron-outer calorimeter
Abdullin, S.; et. al. (Springer Science and Business Media LLC, 2008-10-01)
The Outer Hadron Calorimeter (HCAL HO) of the CMS detector is designed to measure the energy that is not contained by the barrel (HCAL HB) and electromagnetic (ECAL EB) calorimeters. Due to space limitation the barrel calorimeters do not contain completely the hadronic shower and an outer calorimeter (HO) was designed, constructed and inserted in the muon system of CMS to measure the energy leakage. Testing and calibration of the HO was carried out in a 300 GeV/c test beam that improved the linearity and re...
