The aim of our study is transportation planning in perishable food supply chains. We model this problem as the vehicle routing problem with simultaneous pickup and delivery, and soft time windows for perishable products (VRPSPD-STW-P). The objective is to minimize the total costs, consisting of variable transportation costs, vehicle-related fixed costs, food quality degradation costs, and time-window violation costs. We formulate the problem as a mixed-integer linear programming model. Moreover, we propose heuristic and metaheuristic algorithms in the methodology to solve the VRPSPD-STW-P. Our methodology comprises two phases: obtaining initial solutions in the first phase and improving these solutions by a genetic algorithm in the second phase. In these phases, we first employ a method based on the clustering of nodes for the vehicles and different routing heuristics to generate the best routes for the vehicles; that is, solving the problem as an m-traveling salesperson problem with simultaneous pickup and delivery (mTSPSPD). Then the solution of the problem m-TSPSPD is checked for feasibility taking into account the vehicle capacities and tour lengths; the feasible routes are then the solutions for the vehicle routing problem with simultaneous pickup and delivery (VRPSPD). Finally, the VRPSPD solution is evaluated considering the time window and quality constraints (VRPSPD-STW-P). Our solution methodology yields promising solutions in much less computational time than the solutions generated by the exact solution procedures

A Critical analysis of social dimension in sustainable development: a case study of Tepekışla dam and hepp in Tokat, Niksar
Köse, Pınar; Kalaycıoğlu, Hediye Sibel; Department of Social Policy (2012)
This study aims to make a critical analysis of the social dimension of sustainable development as implemented within the Environmental Impact Assessment (EIA) process. Social dimension can be assessed on the basis of six social indicators, which are social accountability, local self-reliance, basic human needs, degree of participation, equity, and appropriate technology. In this context, a field study is conducted in four villages which will be affected by the Tepekışla Dam and Hydroelectric Power Plant (Pr...
Dynamics of consumer behavior and policies in sustainable food systems in Turkey
Atay Haspolat, Nihan; Kalaycıoğlu, Hediye Sibel; Department of Social Policy (2020-11)
This thesis examined causes and results of consumer behaviors, which determine the dynamics of consumption in sustainable food systems and analyzed the effectiveness of public policies on food consumption in Turkey. In this context, the structure of sustainable food systems, factors affecting food consumers’ behaviors and preferences and public policies and policy implications towards food consumers in Turkey are examined. In addition, semi-structured in-depth interviews were conducted with a purposively ch...
A new fuzzy multi-criteria framework for measuring sustainability performance of a supply chain
Erol, Ismail; Sencer, Safiye; Sarı, Ramazan (2011-04-15)
Sustainable supply chain performance measurement is aimed at addressing environmental, social and economic aspects of sustainable supply chain management. It can be argued that it is not easy to reduce all dimensions of sustainable supply chain to a single unit. Then, the issue is that all valuations should somehow be reducible to a single one-dimensional standard. Multi-criteria evaluation introduces a framework to remedy this issue. As a consequence, multi-criteria evaluation seems to supply a proper and ...
The causal nexus between carbon dioxide emissions and agricultural ecosystem-an econometric approach
Asumadu-Sarkodie, Samuel; Owusu, Phebe Asantewaa (2017-01-01)
Achieving a long-term food security and preventing hunger include a better nutrition through sustainable systems of production, distribution, and consumption. Nonetheless, the quest for an alternative to increasing global food supply to meet the growing demand has led to the use of poor agricultural practices that promote climate change. Given the contribution of the agricultural ecosystem towards greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions, this study investigated the causal nexus between carbon dioxide emissions and a...
An Assessment on the link between sustainability and urban form : the case of Gaziantep
Yılmaz, Şeyda; Kayasü, Serap; Urban Design in City and Regional Planning Department (2014)
Sustainability ensures a better quality of life and more sustainable world environment now and in the future. Our climate is constantly changing due to some human induced factors. These changes have negative effects on the environment and human life. Lasting solutions to this global problem can only be achieved by sustainability. Climate change is acknowledged as a serious environmental problem. In recent years, researchers have found a close link between climate change and cities. On the one hand, it is a ...
