With the ever-increasing number of vehicles and technological advancements, transportation-related social problems are addressed with more systematic and smarter solutions, as a part of Intelligent Transportation Systems (ITS) services. Parking management is an ITS application area, where limited parking capacities can be efficiently and fairly utilized by more road users. However, detection of the true nature of parking demand and supply limits as well as the expected response to any policies and technology tools to be employed, is necessary prerequisite step. Middle East Technical University (METU) campus is a built environment that suffers from parking-related problems due to limited parking supply capacity despite the increase in the demand. Thus, parking violations have been increasing lately due to high number of cars in the campus. Besides the negative environmental impacts, parking violations have started to threaten the flow and safety of the campus traffic due to traffic congestion and loss of road network capacity at critic locations. This thesis focuses on estimation of the type and level of parking utilization and violations in METU Campus, so that smart parking management strategies can be recommended for development of a more sustainable campus transportation policies. Smart parking management requires an understanding of land use, parking supply and demand, driver needs, behaviors, and perception of the commuters, in the scope of parking management. Thus , within the study, parking space inventory, parking survey were conducted and a smart campus transportation survey was utilized. After this comprehensive evaluation, a campus-wide parking management strategy plan that promote smart mobility within the campus was proposed within the campus, in 7 stages . In addition, a regional strategy plan, including the locations, and application of the proposed parking pricing strategy, and the areas where parking should be prohibited, has been created.

Smart parking in IoT-enabled cities: A survey
Al-Turjman, Fadi; Malekloo, Arman (2019-08-01)
The rapid growth in population has led to substantial traffic bottlenecks in recent transportation systems. This not only causes significant air pollution, and waste in time and energy, but also signifies the issue of the auto-park scarcity. In the age of Internet of Things (IoT) and smart city ecosystems, smart parking and relevant innovative solutions are necessary towards more sustainable future cities. Smart parking with the help of sensors embedded in cars and city infrastructures can alleviate the dea...
Planning for a successful development of intelligent transportation systems (ITS) in Turkey
Dündar, Selim; Tüydeş Yaman, Hediye; İpekyüz, Beyhan; Karataş Sevinen, Pınar; Hüner, Egecan Emre; Evren, Güngör (2018-04-26)
Since 1990s, Intelligent Transportation Systems (ITS) has been an area of research and implementation following the rapid development in communication and computational fields of research, which has always taken advantage of advances to promote mobility, efficiency and safety in transportation systems. The last two decades ofexperience in mostly the developed countries, the accumulation of knowledge and experience on ITS enabled the discussions on how to evaluate ...
Aerothermodynamic Design Optimization of Hypersonic Vehicles
Eyi, Sinan; Boyd, Iain D. (American Institute of Aeronautics and Astronautics (AIAA), 2019-04-01)
The objective of this study is to develop a reliable and efficient design optimization method for hypersonic vehicles focused on aerothermodynamic environments. Considering the nature of hypersonic flight, a high-fidelity aerothermodynamic analysis code is used for the simulation of weakly ionized hypersonic flows in thermochemical nonequilibrium. A gradient-based method is implemented for optimization. Bezier or nonuniform rational basis spline curves are used to parametrize the geometry or the geometry ch...
Exploring critical success factors for blockchain-based intelligent transportation systems
Çaldağ, Murat Tahir; Gökalp, Ebru (2020-01-01)
Utilization of Intelligent Transportation Systems (ITS) provides increasing demands on decreasing traffic congestions, transportation safety, and environmental problems as well as increasing transportation capacity. Over the past few years, one of the most disruptive and transformational technologies, blockchain technology, has emerged. As a result of offering more security, privacy, traceability, transparency, and decentralized authority, the utilization of blockchain technology in ITS have increased drast...
