The influences of pyrolysis conditions on the products yield distribution and physico-chemical characteristics of biochar derived from peanut shell in a fixed-bed reactor were investigated in this study. The pyrolysis conditions included the pyrolysis temperature (300-700 degrees C), retention time (15-90 min), heating rate (1-10 degrees C min(-1)), gas flow rate (20-200 mL min(-1)) and feedstock particle size (<0.075, 0.075 0.150, 0.150-0.300 and 0.300-2.00 mm). Various analytical techniques were used to characterize the biochar for ultimate and proximate analyses, higher heating value (23.99-30.44 MJ kg(-1)), pH (8.11 -12.89), electrical conductivity (22.78-34.44 mS cm(-1)), surface functional groups (acidic, carboxylic and basic groups), Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy analysis, pore volume (0.055-1.241 cm(3) g(-1)) and specific surface area (7.12-20.96 m(2) g(-1)). The results demonstrated that the temperature predominantly regulated the product yields distribution and characteristics of produced biochar. Furthermore, the heating rate considerably influenced the biochar proximate composition, micropore surface area and pore size. Particle size had significant influences on biochar surface porosity and bio-oil yield. The economic analysis of the pyrolysis system indicated its feasibility and superiority with a positive net present value of 12.07 x 10(6) USD after twenty-five years of operation. Contrasting effects of operating conditions and biomass particle size on bulk characteristics and surface chemistry of rice husk derived-biochars
Abbas, Qumber; Liu, Guijian; Yousaf, Balal; Ali, Muhammad Ubaid; Ullah, Habib; Munir, Mehr Ahmed Mujtaba; Liu, Ruijia (2018-09-01)
In this study, the slow pyrolysis of rice husk was conducted by using a split-tube furnace under a nitrogen environment to investigate the influence of various pyrolysis conditions and biomass particle sizes on products yield distribution as well as physicochemical characteristics and surface chemistry of produced biochars. Results revealed that temperature has a more pronounced influence on products yield compared to the other operational conditions. The biochar yield decreases from 57.13 +/- 5.37% to 37.1...
Emission characterization and delta C-13 values of parent PAHs and nitro-PAHs in size-segregated particulate matters from coal-fired power plants
Wang, Ruwei; Yousaf, Balal; Sun, Ruoyu; Zhang, Hong; Zhang, Jiamei; Liu, Guijian (2016-11-01)
The objective of this study was to characterize parent polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (pPAHs) and their nitrated derivatives (NPAHs) in coarse (PM2.5-10), intermediate (PW1-2.5) and fine (PM1) particulate matters emitted from coal-fired power plants (CFPPs) in Huainan, China. The diagnostic ratios and the stable carbon isotopic approaches to characterize individual PAHs were applied in order to develop robust tools for tracing the origins of PAHs in different size-segregated particular matters (PMs) emitt...
Microwave-Assisted Extraction of Phenolic Compounds from Caper
DURMAZ, Ezgi; Şümnü, Servet Gülüm; Şahin, Serpil (2015-09-02)
In this study, it was aimed to extract phenolic compounds from caper by using microwave and to compare the results with conventional extraction. For microwave-assisted extraction, power, extraction time, solid to solvent ratio, and solvent type were selected as independent variables. Dependent variables were total phenolic content (TPC), antioxidant activity, and concentration of phenolic compounds. The increase in solvent amount increased TPC. The highest TPC was obtained by using extraction conditions of ...
Electrochemical behaviour and electrochemical polymerization of fluoro-substituted anilines
Cihaner, A; Önal, Ahmet Muhtar (2002-08-01)
The electrochemical behaviour of three fluoro-substituted aniline monomers, 2-fluoroaniline (2FAN), 3-fluoroaniline (3FAN) and 4-fluoroaniline (4FAN), was investigated in aqueous acidic and organic media by means of cyclic voltammetry (CV) studies. Constant potential electrolysis (CPE) of the monomers in acetonitrile-water mixture (1: 1 by volume) using NaClO4 as supporting electrolyte yielded soluble polymers. The mechanism of electrochemical polymerization was investigated using in situ electron spin reso...
Optimising clarification of carrot juice by bacterial crude pectinase
Uzuner, Sibel; Çekmecelioğlu, Deniz (2015-12-01)
This study was undertaken to search for potential use of crude bacterial pectinase enzyme produced from Bacillus subtilis grown on hazelnut shell hydrolysate in clarification of carrot juice and to optimize the enzyme load, pH and time using the Box-Behnken response surface methodology (RSM). The carrot juice was treated with the crude pectinase enzyme (5.60 U mL(-1)) at different concentrations (0.1-0.5%), pH (4-7), and time (2-6 h). The obtained enzyme was also compared with commercial fungal pectinase at...
