The objective of this work is to correlate the photocatalytic degradation of the herbicide imazapyr in aqueous suspensions of the commercially available Evonik Aeroxide TiO2 P25 with the dark adsorption phenomena considering both the equilibrium state and the kinetics of adsorption. The results of this study show that the adsorption of imazapyr onto the TiO2 surface is a second-order reaction and satisfies the criteria required by the Langmuir model. The adsorbed amount of imazapyr is found to be high at pH 3 and to decrease with increasing pH. The kinetics of the photocatalytic degradation of imazapyr were analysed taking into account the effect of the pH as well as of the catalyst mass concentration. However, special attention was focussed on the influence of the reactant concentration on the reaction rate. The Langmuir-Hinshelwood model fitting revealed that the apparent adsorption constant obtained under irradiation is significantly larger than the adsorption constant obtained in the dark. The initial reaction rates of the photocatalytic imazapyr degradation were larger than the initial adsorption rates of the probe molecule on the TiO2 surface. It is therefore concluded that the photocatalytic imazapyr degradation does not follow necessarily a Langmuir-Hinshelwood mechanism despite the fact that a rate law having the mathematical form of the Langmuir-Hinshelwood rate law was successfully used to describe the observed dependence of the initial reaction rates on the initial concentrations. A Langmuir-Hinshelwood mechanism for the photocatalytic imazapyr degradation is compatible only with the additional assumption that the rate constant of adsorption increases by irradiation with UV light.

Photofermentative hydrogen production from volatile fatty acids present in dark fermentation effluents
Uyar, Basar; Eroglu, Inci; Yucel, Meral; Gündüz, Ufuk (2009-05-01)
In the present study, the growth and hydrogen production of Rhodobacter sphaeroides O.U. 001, was investigated in media containing five different volatile fatty acids (VIA) individually (malate, acetate, propionate, butyrate and lactate) and in media containing mixtures of these acids that reflect the composition of dark fermentation effluents. The highest hydrogen production rate was obtained in malate (24 ml(hydrogen)/I(reactor)h) and the highest biomass concentration was obtained in acetate containing me...
Stereoselective Synthesis of Bishomo-inositols as Glycosidase Inhibitors
Baran, Arif; Balcı, Metin (2009-01-02)
For the synthesis of various bishomo-inositol derivatives, 1,3,3a,7a-tetrahydro-2-benzofuran was used as the key compound. For further functionalization of the diene unit, the diene was subjected to photooxygenation, epoxidation, and cis-hydroxylation reactions. The endoperoxide linkage was cleaved by thiourea. The remaining double bond was subjected to epoxidation and cis-hydroxylation reactions. The epoxide rings and tetrahydrofuran rings formed were opened by acid-catalyzed reaction with sulfamic acid. T...
Synthesis and characterization of poly(dibromophenylene oxide)s through thermal decomposition of various transition metal complexes in solid state.
Şanlı, Pınar; Kısakürek, Duygu; Aras, Leyla; Department of Chemistry (2002)
In this study, synthesis and characterization of poly(dibromophenylene oxide)s though thermal decomposition of bis(2,4,6-tribromophenolato)di(N- methyl imidazole) Cu(II), bis(2,4,6-tribromophenolato)di(N-methyl illimidazole)Co(II) and bis(2,4,6-tribromophenolato)di(N-methyl imidazole)Ni(II) complexes in solid state was examined. For the characterization of complexes FTIR, DSC, mass spectroscopy, magnetic susceptibility and C, H,N elemental analysis were performed. Syntheses of the polymer were achieved by t...
Stereoselective synthesis of cyclopentanoids and cyclitol derivatives originated from polychlorinated norbornene systems
Gümüş, Ayşegül; Tanyeli, Cihangir; Department of Chemistry (2009)
Optically active polychlorinated norbornene systems are important starting compounds for the synthesis of many complex molecules. The synthetic strategy of this study mainly depends upon the enzymatic resolution of hydroxymethyl-substituted polychlorinated norbornene structures. The enantiomerically enriched acetoxymethyl derivatives were synthesized in high ee values by several lipases. The absolute configuration of tetrachlorinated norbornene system was determined by X-ray analysis. The second part of the...
Photoelectrochemical H-2 production by using bacteriorhodopsin immobilized in PAG
Yucel, M; El-Bashiti, T; Eroğlu, İnci; Sediroglu, V; Turker, L; Gündüz, Ufuk (2000-06-15)
Bacteriorhodopsin (BR), a protein found in the purple membrane of Halobacterium halobium is used as a biocatalyst in photoelectrochemical hydrogen production in a NaCl solution. In present study the biocatalytic effect of BR of a new strain MILTU and strain S-9 were investigated in immobilized membranes The photoelectrochemical hydrogen production experiments were performed in a batch type glass reactor with free H. halobium packed cells or H halobium cells immobilized in polyacrylamide gel (PAG). It was fo...
