Turkish migration to the EU: Non-monetary benefits and selection effects

2011-06-01
This work focuses on Turkish migration, given the possibility of Turkey's membership into the EU. Accurately predicting the amount and nature of immigrant flows that will result from the expansion of the EU has in the past proved to be difficult. A survey conducted by the authors in Turkey in order to tackle this issue, allowed us to identify certain non-monetary factors that are important in the migration decision. Attitudes about the quality of healthcare, quality of education, and other non-monetary benefits proved important, as individuals decide whether they want to migrate. The survey also revealed avenues for figure research, especially in the areas of heterogeneity of migrant flows and country selection by potential migrants.

Turkey: A Vicious Cycle of Euroscepticism?
Düzgit, Senem; Şenyuva, Özgehan (Palgrave Macmillan, 2021-01-01)
Relations between Turkey and the European Union (EU) are currently facing an impasse. After a long period of stagnation, accession negotiations, which began in 2005, are now de facto frozen. Recent public opinion polls in Europe record an all-time low popularity of Turkish membership across the European public, whereas the European political elite has long dropped the discourse on Turkish accession in favour of a “strategic partnership” with Turkey. A similar picture is also observed in Turkey, with growing...

The arguments about full membership in the EU has become a priority for Turkey in the last decade, because Turkey’s joining the EU will have a strong impact on Turkey’s and the EU’s macroeconomic structure. In order to analyze the impacts of Turkish accession into the EU, a computable general equilibrium model has been developed and the results of various policy scenarios have been compared. The model considers the imperfect competition in the Turkish manufacturing sector. Simulation results showed that ful...

Turkey's asylum dilemma and process of EU harmonization
Su, Esra; Tanrısever, Oktay Fırat; Department of European Studies (2008)
Turkey has been one of the few countries that signed the 1951 Convention relating to the Status of Refugees with the provision of maintaining geographical limitation to that of offering protection only to European nationals. This is, however, expected to change as Turkey heads towards EU membership. Since 1999, Turkey has been declared as a candidate country to the European Union (EU), in the Helsinki Summit. It is expected to adopt EU Asylum Acquis into its legislation and to lift the geographical limitati...
