The identification of new genotypes tolerant to the boron toxicity is very important for the breeding programs carried out in the arid and semiarid regions of West Asia and North Africa region. This study aims to determine the genotypes tolerant to the boron toxicity in 141 F6 recombinant inbred lines (RILs) of durum wheat. 141 RILs were characterized in terms of their tolerance to boron toxicity using the parameters: 1–5 scale of symptom score, dry matter yield, biomass reduction, tissue boron concentration. The component of variance varied from 0.69 to 0.95. 22 RILs tolerant for 1–5 scale, 121 RILs ranged from moderately tolerant to tolerant for the biomass reduction, 22 RILs moderately tolerant for the tissue concentration, and 75 RILs varied from moderately tolerant to the most tolerant for the boron content. The B toxicity evaluation parameters used in this study are efficient when they are used all together, and they produced fast and reliable results. However, the principal component analyses displayed that BC, DMY (%) and BR parameters were the most effective and reliable for the evaluation of B toxicity tolerance. The RILs represented a wide range of the genetic variation in response to the B toxicity treatments. The boron toxicity tolerance could be improved by the breeding studies.

The effects of CGAS-STING-TBK1 pathway and NKT cell-activating ligand alpha-galactosylceramide on LEISHMANIA MAJOR infection and protection
Dünüroğlu, Emre; Gürsel, Mayda; Department of Molecular Biology and Genetics (2022-2-8)
Leishmaniasis is a multi-faceted group of diseases caused by various species of Leishmania protozoa. Depending on the infecting Leishmania species, the disease manifests as recurrent cutaneous, mucocutaneous or visceral leishmaniasis all of which can be devastating for infected individuals. Lack of a protective vaccine and the rise of drug resistances in Leishmania spp. prompted us to explore preventative vaccine candidates and novel drugs against Leishmania major. In the first part of this thesis, we evalu...
Determination of esterase enzyme polymorphism in house fly (Musca domestica L.) populations in Turkey
TAŞKIN, VATAN; Taskin, Belgin Gocmen; KÜÇÜKAKYÜZ, KÖKSAL; Kence, Meral (2011-01-01)
The objective of this study was to determine esterase enzyme polymorphism in 16 natural Musca domestica L. populations from the Aegean and Mediterranean regions of Turkey by using the native polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis (PAGE) technique. The high level of genetic variation among populations and species make esterase enzymes an important tool for analyzing genetic differentiation and evolutionary relationships in insects. In the present study, 22 a-esterase bands were detected by using a-naphthylacetat...
A Survey of Niche Overlap and Adaptive Trait Responses of Turkish Honeybee Subspecies to Climate
Kükrer, Mert; Bilgin, Cemal Can; Turak, Ayşe (2016-11-05)
Introduction: Over 24 subspecies or “geographic races” of honeybees in the world appear to have diversified following isolation during the Pleistocene glaciations. Research on their differences in morphology, biogeography, behavior and genetics suggest that Turkish races belong mostly to the same lineage, but evolved in extremely different habitats. Foraging strategies, honey storage, production of young, overwintering success, swarming behavior or aggression show differences between races. Such traits migh...
The influence of single and combined effects of Zn, Cu and temperature on microbial growth
Gikas, P.; Şengör, Sema Sevinç (2014-11-12)
The purpose of the present study is to investigate the single and joint effect of zinc and copper to the growth pattern of the metal tolerant species of Arthrobacter sp. JM018. The results showed that, both, Zn and Cu at concentrations between 1 to 10 µM stimulated the growth of the above microorganism at 35 °C. Stimulation was reduced with the increase of Zn concentration, while the opposite phenomenon was observed for copper. On the other hand, similar concentrations of joint Zn and Cu resulted to slight ...
The impact of over-exploitation on the genetic structure of Turkish red pine (Pinus brutia Ten.) populations determined by RAPD markers
Lise, Yildiray; Kaya, Zeki; Isik, Fikret; Sabuncu, Rumi; Kandemir, Irfan; Önde, Sertaç (2007-01-01)
To determine the possible impact of over-exploitation on the genetic structure of Turkish red pine (Pinus brutia Ten.) populations, three natural and three over-exploited (human degraded) populations of the species in the Mediterranean region of Turkey were investigated with Randomly Amplified Polymorphic DNA (RAPD). With the 80 RAPT) primers tested, 12 of them yielded 137 polymorphic RAPD fragments. Four of the studied populations maintained unique fragments. The mean proportion of polymorphic fragments fo...
