This study investigates the performances of reduction methods of the seepage problem at the foundation of a real embankment dam, Oğulcuk Dam located in Yozgat, Turkey. The steady-state seepage modeling is used in the analysis. The variation of relief wells inner diameter, location and spacing parameters are compared with each other and are also compared with different alternatives, such as cutoff walls, core trenches, and cutoff walls with blankets. Different variations of those methods i.e. locations and depths are also discussed and compared with each other and relief wells. Performances of relief wells are also compared in terms of cost. In general, it is presented that between the compared reduction methods of seepage, relief wells has a better performance and can be used as a remedial measure to protect the alluvial foundation and toe of embankment dams from the hazardous effects of foundation seepage.

A comprehensive evaluation of possible eutrophication control methods for Keban dam reservoir with special emphasis on pre-dam construction
Karul, C; Soyupak, S; Tuncer, A; Mukhallalati, L; Cilesiz, AF (1997-05-01)
This study evaluates the available eutrophication control techniques that could be applied in Keban Dam Reservoir. A limited reduction of phosphorous was shown to be achieved by pre-dam construction on the major nutrient source, Murat River. Biomanipulation was evaluated as an ineffective method. A performed analysis has shown that only a drainage basin management program may decrease the phosphorous loading to the extent desired.
An analysis of deformation behaviorof Muratlı asphalt faced rockfill dam
Ünsever, Yeşim Sema; Özkan, M. Yener; Department of Civil Engineering (2007)
In this study, settlement and seepage behavior of Muratlı Dam, which is the first asphalt faced rockfill dam in Turkey, is investigated for the “end of construction” and “reservoir impoundment” loading conditions. Two dimensional plane strain finite element analyses are carried out in order to determine the total stresses, displacements and pore water pressures. Hardening soil model is used in order to represent the non-linear, inelastic and stress dependent behavior of rockfill material. Material model par...
Development of a Safety-Inspection Method for River Bridges in Turkey
Akay, Huseyin; Kocyigit, Musteyde Baduna; Yanmaz, Ali Melih (MDPI AG, 2019-09-01)
In this paper, findings of a research project about river bridges in Turkey are shared and details of the developed safety-inspection method based on hydrological and hydraulic factors are presented. In the project, the Western Black Sea Basin was chosen as the pilot area, where the basin is mountainous with steep slopes and has a rainy climate with frequent flash floods. Many river bridges in the basin were inspected at different flow conditions throughout the project duration of three years. The developed...
Modeling of lithology induced chemical anomalies in the aquifer systems of the Kazan Trona deposit area, Ankara, Turkey
Çamur, Mehmet Zeki; Yazıcıgil, Hasan (2008-04-01)
The study was carried out in order to investigate existing hydrogeochemical relationships between groundwater environment and geological units in the Kazan trona deposit area, Ankara, Turkey. Evaluations indicate that concentrations of alkalinity, boron, chloride and sodium in the upgradient groundwater of the Eocene sedimentary units gradually increase toward downgradient by the interactions of saline minerals (searlesite, shortite, northupite and pyrite) present in the secondary structures (microfractures...
Investigation of the failure mechanism and stabilization of a landslide in weathered tuffite, Giresun, northeastern Turkey
Avsar, Ozgur; Akgün, Haluk; Kockar, Mustafa Kerem (2014-11-01)
This study investigates the causes and failure mechanism of the Aksu landslide that occurred during the construction of the Giresun-Espiye road between KM: 1 + 030-1 + 170 in northern Turkey and recommends proper stabilization techniques. For the purpose of investigating the causes and mechanism of this slope failure, engineering geological mapping, geotechnical investigation and rock mass characterization were performed. From top to bottom, weathered tuffite, tuffite, flysch, and dacitic tuffite were the m...
