This study investigated the role of the bar model method, a significant aspect of the Singapore mathematics curriculum, in the remediation of seventh-grade students' errors on algebra word problems. To accomplish this purpose, we first assessed students' errors on a written test involving algebra problems and identified ten students based on the errors they demonstrated. These students were then offered instruction on how to use the bar model method. Following the instruction, we did clinical interviews and observed that the Singapore bar model method helped students understand the problem and transform words into mathematical expressions. Hence, the bar model served as an assistive tool for the remediation of students' errors in algebra word problems by facilitating students' comprehension and transformation.

An Investigation on seventh grade students’ use of bar model method in solving algebraic word problems
Baysal, Esra; Sevinç, Şerife; Department of Elementary Science and Mathematics Education (2019)
The purpose of this research is understanding the use of bar model method used in Singapore math curriculum while solving algebra word problems in 7th grades and students’ reasons for the solution method preferences in solving algebraic word problems. The data were collected from 10 seventh grade students from a public middle school in Sincan, Ankara, in the spring semester of 2018-2019. In this single case study, an initial assessment was applied to 42 seventh grade students for selecting the participants....
The effect of an instruction designed by cognitive load theory principles on 7th grade students' achievement in algebra topics and cognitive load
Takır, Aygil; Aksu, Meral; Department of Educational Sciences (2011)
The purpose of this study was to investigate the effect of an instruction designed by the Cognitive Load Theory (CLT) principles on 7th grade students‟ achievement in Algebra topics and cognitive load. Two groups (experimental and control) from a public school in Istanbul took part in the study. Each group had 40 students; totally 80 students were included in the study. A quasi-experimental research design was utilized. The study was conducted in totally six weeks in 2010-2011 fall semester. The instruction...
The effect of peer instruction method on the 8th grade students' mathematics achievement in transformation geometry and attitudes towards mathematics
Akay, Güler; Işıksal Bostan, Mine; Department of Educational Sciences (2011)
The purpose of the research study is to investigate the effect of peer instruction method on the 8th grade students’ mathematics achievement and mathematics attitudes in transformation geometry (fractals, rotation, reflection, translation) in crowded classrooms (more than 50 students). Besides, in this study it was aimed to investigate the gender differences regarding mathematics achievement and mathematics attitude. The study was conducted during the academic year 2009-2010. The sample was consisted of 112...
The Effects of teaching linear equations with dynamic mathematics software on seventh grade students’ achievement
Doktoroğlu, Rezzan; Çakıroğlu, Erdinç; Department of Elementary Science and Mathematics Education (2013)
The purpose of this study was to investigate the effects of teaching linear equations with Dynamic Mathematics Software (GeoGebra) on seventh grade students’ achievement compared to the regular instruction. Randomized posttest-only control group design was utilized in the study. 60 seventh grade students (32 girls and 28 boys) of a public school in Yenimahalle district in Ankara participated in the study. The study was conducted in 2011-2012 fall semester, lasting 9 class hours in three weeks. The data was ...
The effects of problem solving approaches on students’ performance and self-regulated learning in mathematics
Polat, Zeynep Sonay; Bulut, Safure; Department of Secondary Science and Mathematics Education (2009)
The main purpose of this study was to investigate the effects of problem solving approaches on pre-service elementary teachers’ basic mathematics achievement, problem- solving performance and their self regulated learning. The study was conducted as quasi - experimental design with 110 elementary school pre-service teachers at a public university in Central Anatolia Region in the 2007-2008 academic year during the second semester. The time duration of the study was 12 weeks. Experimental group was instructe...
