FLEXIBLE TECHNOLOGY AND INDUSTRIAL-STRUCTURE IN THE UNITED-STATES
CARLSSON, B; Taymaz, Erol (Springer Science and Business Media LLC, 1994-06-01)
This paper analyzes the development over the postwar period of output, employment, and the number of plants in manufacturing in the United States. It is shown that the distribution of flexible technology in the form of machine tools (NCMTs) shifted markedly toward small plants during the 1980s. It is found that the probability of adoption and the penetration rate of NCMTs are higher in large than in small plants, even though the number of NCMTs per worker is much higher in small plants. This apparent parado...
Flexible assembly line design problem with fixed number of workstations
Barutcuoglu, Sirin; Azizoğlu, Meral (Informa UK Limited, 2011-01-01)
In the paper, we study a flexible assembly line design problem with equipment decisions. We assume the task times and equipment costs are correlated in the sense that for all tasks the cheaper equipment gives no smaller task time. Given the cycle time and number of workstations we aim to find the assignment of tasks and equipment to the workstations so as to minimise the total equipment cost. We develop a branch and bound algorithm that uses powerful lower bounds and reduction mechanisms. Our computational ...
Flexible assembly line design problem with fixed number of workstations
Barutçuoğlu, Şirin; Azizoğlu, Meral; Department of Industrial Engineering (2009)
In this thesis, we study a Flexible Assembly Line Design problem. We assume the task times and equipment costs are correlated in the sense that for all tasks the cheaper equipment gives no smaller task time. Given the cycle time and number of workstations we aim to find the assignment of tasks and equipments to the workstations that minimizes the total equipment cost. We study a special case of the problem with identical task times. For the general case, we develop a branch and bound algorithm that uses pow...
FLEXIBLE AUTOMATION IN THE UNITED-STATES ENGINEERING INDUSTRIES
Taymaz, Erol (1991-12-01)
The changes in manufacturing systems and industrial structure brought about by the development of new, computer-based flexible technologies has been a subject of growing debate during the last decade. There is a lack of solid empirical support for almost all hypotheses developed in this debate since data on the relative use of various manufacturing systems are not available for an econometric analysis of the subject. The objective of this paper is to determine the major manufacturing systems and their distr...
Modular embedded system design / implementation for mechatronic education and research
Nursal, Ali Özgü; Koku, Ahmet Buğra; Department of Mechanical Engineering (2007)
In this thesis a modular embedded system for Mechatronics education and research is designed and implemented. Four types of control boards are manufactured and related software is developed at board and PC level. A star like topology is used for boards architecture. One bridge board is responsible for handling communication between the PC and all the other boards that are connected independently to that bridge board. For PC communication Universal Seial Bus (USB), for inter peripheral communication serial p...
