The paper aims to present a model that generates a framework for incorporating different types of performance issues into the conceptual design to improve the decision-making process of students by extracting only the critical parameters and demonstrate its applicability in the context of architectural education. The proposed Performance-based Interlinked Model (PBIM) seeks to address the question of whether design and performance parameters can be evaluated together in the early design stage, where conceptual ideas are explored, by integrating knowledge taught in different types of courses in architectural education, including design, building science and technology. The salient pedagogical approach consists in three stages—namely, generating the design model, applying the selected method for performance computation—including solar radiation, daylight, structural, wind flow and spatial analyses— and regenerating the design model by extracting critical performanceparameters. Data is collected via a process-analysis method driven by case studies, and a network graph is generated that visualizes the data. The degree and centrality values of the graph are then extracted to assess the individual contribution of the parameters in the architectural design process. The PBIM is validated by calculating the Sensitivity Rate (SR) for each study. The proposed model enables the integrated evaluation of design and performance parameters and the enhancement of students’ decision-making process concerning performance analysis.

An Interactive computational design approach for creating architectural topographiesi
Ongun, Gökhan; Mennan, Zeynep; Department of Architecture (2013)
The research aims at developing a digital environment for understanding and analyzing natural forces and designing according to the simultaneous feedback given by omputational tools. The thesis is an investigation into the concept of interactivity between the designer and computer through the use of computational fluid dynamic tools in a local context of Eastern Netherlands Coast, in response to the already dynamic natural fluid like elements such as air, coastal currents and sand particles. The behavior of...
The position of three-dimensional modeling and visualization techniques in industrial design education
COŞKUN, MERVE; Akiner, Dilem (2012-05-04)
The purpose of this research is to determine the position of three-dimensional modeling and digital visualization within the scope of concept and product development process in the undergraduate education in Middle East Technical University Faculty of Architecture Department of Industrial Design, designate the problems that the students encounter during the integration of these methods to the design process, and finally question how these methods can be incorporated into design education in order to influen...
Unfolding diagrams as generative design tools in architectural design process: united network (UN) Studio-Möbius House , Arnhem Central Station , Mercedes Benz Museum
Kuyumcu, Başak; Önür, Selahattin; Department of Architecture (2010)
The aim of this thesis is to explore the role of the diagrams as generative design tools in architectural design process. Identifying the utilization of the diagrams as infrastructural and organizational elements in the design process, it aims to be concentrate on their potency for generating novel design concepts. The search has been for the possibilities of design processes developed and manipulated not through analytical use of diagrams that represents the already established relationships but through th...
Performative design thinking in architectural practice
Ataman, Cem; Gürsel Dino, İpek; Department of Architecture (2018)
During the last decades, the increasing need to ensure building performance during architectural design practices has led to highly interactive relations between architecture and various other disciplines, in which performance concepts are tightly integrated into the building design process. Computational tools supporting performative architectural design processes make this interdisciplinary integration possible. The critical consequence of the early consideration of performative principles and the collabo...
The Redesign Studio: An Intensive Evidence-Based Approach for Ideating Product and UX/UI Improvements
Pedgley, Owaın Francıs; Şener Pedgley, Bahar (2022-09-08)
This paper describes a six-week design studio that set out to make ‘redesign’ an educationally rewarding activity, whilst developing students’ skills in evidence-based designing. Final year industrial design undergraduates chose a personally owned household electrical or electronic product that they considered in need of improving or updating. The redesign studio guided students through five consecutive stages of briefings, activities, and critiques: (i) product anatomy analysis and part labelling, (ii) mar...
