© 2020, Springer Nature Switzerland AG.This study of automotive HMI (human-machine interface) design is built around the fact that traditional product modelling and testing tools (i.e. foam-clay mock-ups, working prototypes) are increasingly being replaced by simulation technologies. The development of these technologies creates challenges as well as opportunities for product design teams. This study was carried out as a workshop to understand these challenges. A shortlist of fourteen new in-vehicle interactive technologies was determined through a literature review, followed by recruitment of four experts to evaluate the simulation of these technologies. The evaluation was based on pre-set criteria regarding the suitability, availability of tools and extent of research and development required to simulate the interactive technologies, within a context of new product design and development.

Multiobjective design optimization of rockets and missiles
Öztürk, Mustafa Yavuz; Tekinalp, Ozan; Department of Aerospace Engineering (2009)
Multidisciplinary design optimization of aerospace vehicles has attracted interest of many researchers. Well known aerospace companies are developing tools for the mutlidisciplinary design optimization. However, the multiobjective optimization of the design is a new and important area investigated very little by the researchers. This thesis will examine the approaches to the multiobjective and mutlidisciplinary design optimization of rockets and missiles. In the study, multiobjective optimization method cal...
Spatial 3D local descriptors for object recognition in RGB-D images
Loğoğlu, K. Berker; Temizel, Alptekin; Kalkan, Sinan; Department of Information Systems (2016)
Introduction of the affordable but relatively high resolution color and depth synchronized RGB-D sensors, along with the efforts on open-source point-cloud processing tools boosted research in both computer vision and robotics. One of the key areas which have drawn particular attention is object recognition since it is one of the crucial steps for various applications. In this thesis, two spatially enhanced local 3D descriptors are proposed for object recognition tasks: Histograms of Spatial Concentric Surf...
Experience prototyping through virtual reality head-mounted displays: Design appraisals of automotive user interfaces
Şen, Güzin; Şener Pedgley, Bahar (2022-01-01)
© 2022 Informa UK Limited, trading as Taylor & Francis Group. This paper investigates virtual reality head-mounted displays (VR-HMDs) as immersive and interactive media to simulate how new automotive user interfaces will contribute to passengers’ user experience (UX) through experience prototyping of a conceptual infotainment system for front-seat passengers. It first demonstrates the integration of VR-HMDs into experience prototypes through (1) identification of what to prototype by deconstructing the syste...
Parallel shape optimization of a missile on a grid infrastructure
Oktay, Erdal; Merttopcuoglu, Osman; Şener, Cevat; Ketenci, Ahmet; Akay, Hasan U. (2011-01-01)
A computational tool is developed to be used in the preliminary design of an air vehicle. This tool parametrically optimizes the airframe shape. In order to search the entire solution space thoroughly, a genetic algorithm is used. Code parallelization is utilized to decrease the convergence time of the airframe shape design of a realistic missile geometry on a Grid infrastructure to further improve the search quality. In this work, a generic missile geometry is taken as a test case for a design application....
Hardware implementation of an active feature tracker for surveillance applications
Solmaz, Berkan; Akar, Gözde; Department of Electrical and Electronics Engineering (2008)
The integration of image sensors and high performance processors into embedded systems enabled the development of intelligent vision systems. In this thesis, we developed an active autonomous system to be used for surveillance applications. The proposed system detects a single moving object in the field of view automatically and tracks it in a wide area by controlling the pan-tilt-zoom features of the camera. The system can also go to an alarm state to warn the user. The processing unit of the system is a T...
