Design decision-making can be viewed as the result of the interaction of knowledge, skills and values. The complexity of the design for sustainability agenda is explored in this paper through a discussion of the knowledge, skills and values associated with the designing of a polymer acoustic guitar. This was a case study for a recent PhD research project concerning the relationship of knowledge and designing. The role of values in design decision-making is being researched further through the analysis of designing with recycled polymers, and this paper: explains the choice of designing in recycled polymers as a context for exploring the role of values in design decision-making; outlines the research strategy being pursued; gives an indication of the results obtained from pilot studies and early research investigations.

Kılınç, Selçuk; Geban, Ömer; Öztürk, Gökhan; Department of Mathematics and Science Education (2018)
In the 21st century, it is important that individuals have features of creativity, strong communication skills, critical and analytical thinking, and ability to collaborate. Providing an interdisciplinary learning in all processes from pre-school to higher education is an important advantage for countries bringing these properties to its citizens and becoming one leading countries of the world in the future. That interdisciplinary learning is possible by integrating the knowledge of science, technology, eng...
Antecedents of better performing teams: test of perceived team job crafting model
Purtul, Tuğba; Bilgiç, Reyhan; Department of Psychology (2019)
This present study examined the relationship between team performance and its antecedents such as team task characteristics (autonomy, feedback, skill variety, task identity, and task significance), team personality (proactivity, collective efficacy) and interpersonal trust under job demands and resources framework model. Also, the sequential mediating effect of team job crafting and team work engagement in this relationship was investigated. The study surveyed 147 people, comprised of 46 teams, from differ...
Design Management Capability Assessment From the Perspective of Companies Pursuing Different Business Strategies in Global Value Chains
Er, Özlem; Tuncer Manzakoğlu, Bilgen (Middle East Technical University Faculty of Architecture, 2021-12-01)
Design management (DM) is a strategic business capability to gain competitive advantage in the global market. To guide companies to integrate DM into their organizations, a multitude of diagnostic frameworks and tools were put forward. These studies also provide pathways for better use of design and its integration into organizational strategy and functions, hence for better DM. Operating in emerging economies, latecomer firms (LCFs) develop their DM capability along with their technological and manufacturi...
Organizational memory formation and its use in construction
Ozorhon, B; Dikmen Toker, İrem; Birgönül, Mustafa Talat (Informa UK Limited, 2005-01-01)
As knowledge becomes a source of competitive advantage, knowledge-management activities have become critical for success. Construction firms can effectively use their organizational memory to enhance their decision-making abilities. A framework was constructed to model the organizational memory formation process in construction companies. Based on this model, an interview study was conducted to investigate both the organizational memory formation and the role of organizational memory in strategic decision-m...
Problem structuring with user in mind : user concept in the architectural design studio
Özten Anay, Meltem; Erkılıç, Mualla; Department of Architecture (2010)
Dealing with the problem between user related knowledge and design, the present thesis underlines the guiding role of designer’s user concept as a concept in problem structuring, by framing his/her understanding about user and influencing knowledge use and solution generation. Considering limitations of prevailing user concept in the architectural design studio, underlying problems are detected with reference to knowledge and design contexts, which have critical influence on the formation of user concept, p...
