Immersive Virtual Environments (IVEs), particularly Mixed-Reality (MR) technologies, continue to have an increasing impact on design processes and design education. This study focuses on MR's potentials in Basic Design (BD) education and its influence on novice designers' design thinking abilities. In this study, through a newly developed MR-based design framework, DesignMR, a comparative analysis between design processes in MR and the physical environment is presented. A hybrid evaluation methodology is used in the context of three-dimensional (3D) BD tasks through two sets of protocol studies: Linkography and exit interviews. Linkography is a method to analyze the design process based on detecting design moves and their links with each other. In this study, linkographic analyses point to an increase in critical moves and link index values in MR as compared to the physical environment for all participants. This indicates that MR can trigger improved creativity, design productivity, and design exploration by idea generation. Exit interviews highlighted the positive impact of DesignMR on the motivation, work efficiency, and 3D perception of the participants. Further research will be pursued for improved hand gestures to increase the effectiveness of object interaction.

Sayısal Ortamda, Tasarımın Deneyimlenmesi İçin Arayüzlerin Geliştirilmesi: Bir Ön-Tasarım Parametresi Olarak Ses
Özgenel, Çağlar Fırat; Sorguç, Arzu (2011-01-01)
In architecture of our day, with the enhancement in technology, experiencing design decisions and / or changes by means of various computational technologies in computational medium has become an essential design tool. With the presence of the tools used in computational medium, changes in the architectural design process occurred and the usage of the tools drifted from simply virtual experience to optimization of the design by examining the design throughout the process. In the performance based design app...
Designing and developing an accessible web-based assistive technology for students with visual impairment
KAMALI ARSLANTAŞ, TUĞBA; Yıldırım, İbrahim Soner; ALTUNAY, BANU (2022-04-01)
This article introduces the design principles of a web-based assistive technology (WAT) developed for students with visual impairment (VI). The pedagogical goal guiding the development process was the enhancement of vocabulary knowledge for students studying English as a foreign language (EFL) in terms of their spelling and semantics. The study attempted to overcome the problems of individuals with VI through provision of an accessible and suitable learning environment. A design-based research (DBR) framewo...
Guidelines and principles for efficient interaction on large touchscreens with collaborative usage
Pekin, Tacettin Sercan; İşler, Veysi; Günel Kılıç, Banu; Department of Information Systems (2017)
Understanding collaborative usage of large-size screen systems is important for advancing the general study of human-computer interaction (HCI) as well as for guiding the designers while creating efficient interactive large-size systems. This thesis aims to provide guidance for the designers of collaborative large-size screen systems. It therefore gives background information about such systems, defines similarities and differences in existing systems, compares existing design guidelines and principles, tes...
Pioneers of the Next Generation Sustainability Strategies in the Built Environments: Robotics in Architecture
Bostancı Sabur, Hafize Büşra (2019-12-01)
The discussions on “sustainability in architecture” that shapes policies and practices by seeking less footprints in the ecosystem, and “computational technologies” that forces all design disciplines re- think each phase from initial design to end product as well as in the realm of architecture are two important subjects of this century. Environmental problems have become a reality that should be discussed at many levels and the solutions are being tried to be produced. Factors such as i...
An evoluation of virtual design studio : a course between Middle East Technical University and Delft University of Technology
Öztoprak, Aydın; Erbuğ, Çiğdem; Department of Industrial Design (2004)
This thesis analyzes the application of computer aided design tools and online collaboration environments in design education. The focus of this study is the utilization of online collaboration environments in design education in order to conduct an efficient and effective virtual design studio course. The requirements of design education and online collaboration environments will be identified and the coinciding and conflicting points will be discussed. The elements of design education; the concept generat...
