As the world population is getting older, care for elderly and procurement to their special needs gains importance for both national and local governments. Therefore, distribution of elderly population and their (residential) mobility behaviours gains importance to improve policies coupled in this respect. However, although demographic processes can easily be monitored and projected over time for a country, estimating distribution of certain population cohorts over space (elderly population in our case) entails difficulties. Indeed, elderly population does not show a uniform distribution in space. This study investigates spatial variation and dynamics of elderly population in Turkey, where elderly population is percolating unevenly in space. We devise two complementary ANCOVA models and a structural equations model, which suggest a disproportionate and growing share of elderly in small, inner and coastal areas, especially sun-belt coastal districts. We conclude the study with prospective policies for elderly for central and local governments. Our findings suggest inclusive and attentive policies geared to spatial reflections of demographic processes. In particular, we favour policies focused on improved services for the elderly and spatial planning considering special populations groups, one of which is elderly population.

While the number of chronic disease patients are increasing with the aging population, their complex treatments are a burden in today’s healthcare systems both economically and technically. Integrated care systems are one of the most powerful modern technologies to overcome these difficulties and provide more efficient treatments. Integrated care enables planning the chronic disease treatments in a sustainable and collaborative way for healthcare professionals from various disciplinaries. It also helps care...
Longitudinal models for life expectancy at birth in Turkey

World Health Organization (WHO) gives the definition of life expectancy at birth as ―the average number of years that a newborn is expected to live if current mortality rates continue to apply‖. Life expectancy at birth is an important indicator of a country's overall health status and its economic and social level of development. In order for governments to set their policies correctly, it is important to determine factors that affect life expectancy at birth and how they affect it. In this thesis, longitu...

Demands and expectations for health care have gradually increased with the longer life expectancy and decline in birth rate, however the resources reserved for health services are relatively limited. The countries with aging population problems are trying to develop new systems to obtain more effective usage of current resources. The aging population and resultant chronic illnesses has become a real problem for Turkey as well. The increase in elderly population results in more demand for health care because...
Self management of patients with ankylosing spondylitis through a personal health system
Gençtürk, Mert; Çiçekli, Fehime Nihan; Doğaç, Asuman; Department of Computer Engineering (2015)
Today, the growth in the number of aged people in the European population imposes an increasing burden on the healthcare systems. Accordingly, the number of people suffering from chronic conditions continues rising, which leads to an increasing demand for health care services and the subsequent cost pressure on the systems. In this environment, the citizens', especially chronic patients’, contribution to their own treatment is crucial to ensure future health care supply in ageing society. Patient empowermen...

Köse, Neşe ; Çolpan Erkan, Nilgün (Middle East Technical University, Faculty of Architecture, 2014-6-1)
Improved quality in technological and medical services have resulted in an increase in the number of elderly people within the average population. Concordantly , the demands and desires of the elderly population have gained significance. Standards that consider elderly people’s needs in their living environments have become one of the primary topics of discussion. Today, behind the global-scale transformation of the concept of old age and perception towards elderly people lies modernism (including industria...
