Within the scope of this study, seismic performance of the St. Mamas Church (Morphu, Cyprus) that dates back to 16th Century was assessed. This structure is one of the finest examples of a three aisled basilica with a central dome that was constructed based on Franco-Byzantine type architectural style. The structure is single-story with a plan area of 19m x 8m and a height of 7.5m that utilizes thick perimeter walls together with a system of cylindrical vaults and a spherical dome. The main construction material used at this structure is local highly sandy calcarenite. With the non-destructive tests carried out, mechanical properties of the material used were identified. Among the non-destructive tests utilized; Rock Hammer, Ultrasonic Pulse Velocity, Infrared Thermography as well as Ground Penetrating Radar Tests can be listed. Based on the detailed information gathered on the structure, its 3D Finite Element model was built. With this model, seismic performance of the church was assessed with the aim of identifying critical parts of this structure. In this paper, our findings are compared with results obtained by other researchers for structures of similar geometry in Europe.

Numerical models for the seismic assessment of St. Nicholas Cathedral, Cyprus
Cagnan, Zehra (2012-08-01)
Within the scope of this study, seismic performance of the St. Nicholas Cathedral that dates back to 1300s was assessed. This structure resembles to the Rheims Cathedral of France with a nave of seven bays ending in a polygonal apse, together with flanking aisles ending in apsidal chapels of similar shape. According to historical records, it sustained heavy earthquake damage twice to its roof structure and flying buttresses. The main construction material used at St. Nicholas Cathedral is calcarenite. With ...
Dynamic response of a gothic cathedral in Cyprus

Within the scope of this study, dynamic response of the St. Nicholas Cathedral in Cyprus that dates back to the 13th century was assessed based on obtained earthquake records. This structure resembles to the Rheims Cathedral of France with a nave of seven bays ending in a polygonal apse, together with flanking aisles ending in apsidal chapels of similar shape. According to historical records, it sustained heavy earthquake damage twice to its roof structure and flying buttresses. The main construction materi...
Transformation of the Ottoman built environment in the nineteenth century in Anatolia: the case of Tokat
Kardaş, Ayşegül; Altan, Tomris Elvan; Department of History of Architecture (2011)
In this study the Ottoman built environmet in the last period of the nineteenth century Anatolian city is examined. The study aims to explain the construction of new buildings as well as the transformation of earlier types during the process of contemporary modernization and centralization in the Empire. The main frame of the study is formed of the public and the private spaces that formed the urban built environment, and the transformation of these spaces. The city of Tokat has been chosen as the area of s...
Assessment of seismic behavior of traditional timber frame Ottoman houses: Frame tests
Aktas Erdem, Y. D.; Akyuz, U.; Erdil, B.; Türer, Ahmet; Şahin Güçhan, Neriman (2010-01-01)
There are numerous observations made following a number of historic and contemporary earthquakes, claiming that the Ottoman traditional timber-frame, himis, houses have an inherent seismic resistant property. It is argued that timber frame houses behaved better under earthquake loading, based on the fact that the number of collapsed timber structures is less than the other construction types. In most of the reported cases, however, comparisons made for the seismic performances of himis houses and the others...
Numerical Modeling of the 1939 Erzincan Earthquake
