Behaviour of bentonite suspensions in non-aqueous media
Uskarcı, Togan; Arol, Ali İhsan; Department of Mining Engineering (2006)
Bentonite is a smectite type clay mineral and swells in water. In this thesis, the effect of acetone, methyl-ethyl ketone, n-hexane on the properties of bentonite was determined by thermal analysis and water absorption tests. The tests indicated no significant change with treating bentonite with organic liquids. Because of the swelling property, only small amount of bentonite can be suspended in water. This may limit certain applications of bentonite. In this thesis, feasibility of suspending large quantiti...
Behaviour of window glass panels during earthquakes
Sucuoğlu, Haluk (1997-08-01)
The seismic behaviour of window glass panels is investigated. Glass damage observed in past earthquakes and previous research on the seismic performance of glass components are reviewed, Seismic design code procedures proposed for mitigating the damage sustained by glass components are evaluated. Analytical procedures are developed for calculating the in-plane deformation capacity and out-of-plane resistance of window glass panels subjected to seismic excitation. Simple practical procedures are proposed for...
Behaviour of oversize particles in iron ore balling
Basdag, A; Arol, Ali İhsan (2004-04-01)
The fineness of material for iron ore pelletizing is generally 80% to 90% -325# (45 mum). The presence of oversize particles (+500 mum) in the feed does not exceed a few tenths of a percent and their behaviour in pelletizing has not attracted much attention. This is partly because the behaviour of oversize particles can not be easily observed in lab tests. In a recent industrial plant-scale test, it was determined that oversize particles tend to accumulate in the green balling circuit. Such an occurrence do...
BEHAVIOUR OF HTPB-POLYURETHANE ELASTOMER MATERIAL REINFORCED WITH MICRO AND NANO PARTICLES
Erten, Emre; Kaynak, Cevdet; Atalar, Taner; Department of Metallurgical and Materials Engineering (2022-8)
Hydroxyl-Terminated-Polybutadiene Polyurethane (HTPB-PU) elastomer materials are mainly used in the “liner” layer of solid propellant rocket motor cases. The required levels of mechanical and thermal properties are obtained by reinforcing this elastomer matrix with approximately 10 wt% micron-sized carbon black (mCB) particles. Therefore, the main purpose of this study was to investigate effects of mCB alone and then when used together with 3 wt% nano-sized carbon black (nCB), micron-sized zirconia (mZrO2),...
