Electromechanical systems, which provide electrical power and dataconnection between moving terminals require high conduction and erosionresistant surfaces. Transfers of electrical power and data are accomplishedby the contact of drum and brush wires. The simultaneous electrochemicaldeposition of desired Au-Ag-Cu alloy compositions, which can be used tocoat the brush wires, was investigated in this study. In the scope of the study, the static potential and cyclic voltammetry behaviors of gold, silver andcopper cyanide plating baths, as well as the mixtures of binary and ternarybaths were investigated to obtain suitable amount of KCN and workingpotential values. SEM and EDS analyses were conducted in thecharacterization of coated samples.

Development of CuNiSi-x alloy catenary parts by thermomechanical processing for railway applications
Koç, Ömer Faruk; Kalkanlı, Ali; Department of Metallurgical and Materials Engineering (2017)
Electrical conductivity together with some other mechanical properties like strength is needed for catenary systems in railway applications. In recent years, copper and its alloys especially the ones with Ni and Si which can mostly satisfy these mechanical needs are extensively researched. For this reason, uses of CuNiSi base alloys have become widespread. In the research study CuNiSi base alloys were put through several treatments to improve their properties. These treatments were basically melting and cas...
Investigation of multilevel inverters for d-statcom applications
Deniz, Mustafa; Ermiş, Muammer; Department of Electrical and Electronics Engineering (2009)
The most important advantages of Multilevel Inverters are the absence of a coupling transformer for medium voltage applications and low harmonic current content. In this way, relocatable and economical STATCOM systems can be realized. Complex control algorithms and the isolation problems of measurement devices and power supplies are the main challenging parts of this type of application. In this study, the design, realization, and the performance of a Voltage Source Type Cascaded Multilevel Converter Based ...
Investigation of solid state phase transformations in manganese-aluminum alloys
Acar, Özgün; Kalay, Yunus Eren; Kalay, İlkay; Department of Metallurgical and Materials Engineering (2016)
Permanent magnets have a wide range of application areas such as electric motors, loudspeakers, and generators. The permanent magnet industry is highly dependent on rare-earth (RE) elements. Because of the strategical importance of these RE elements, these magnets become less available and more expensive to reach, which bears a need for RE-free permanent magnets with higher magnetic properties than the conventionally available ones. Mn-Al alloys have a great potential of being used in emerging magnetic appl...

In this research work, the design and implementation of a 154-kV +/- 50-Mvar transmission static synchronous compensator (T-STATCOM) have been carried out primarily for the purposes of reactive power compensation and terminal voltage regulation and secondarily for power system stability. The implemented T-STATCOM consists of five 10.5-kV +/- 12-Mvar cascaded multilevel converter (CMC) modules operating in parallel. The power stage of each CMC is composed of five series-connected H-bridges (HBs) in each phas...
