Electrically powered unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) are gaining attention and attempts are underway to improvetheir performance in terms of weight, vibration, noise, emission and reliability. Fuel cells or batteries are commonlyused systems in these UAVs. In this study, the energy storage comparison between the Proton Exchange Membrane(PEM) fuel cell and the Lithium-Sulfur (Li-S) battery is performed for a 500W UAV to determine the appropriatedesign. While a commercial product is used for the mass predictions of the PEMFC case, the developed systemlevelperformance model is used for the Li-S battery. It is observed that the PEM fuel cell case is favorable for all ofthe flight times investigated here and there is a need for an analysis beyond the boundaries of the designated casestudy to observe the conditions in which the use of Li-S battery is more advantageous.

Computational Investigation of Flow Through a Louvered Inlet Configuration
Tuncer, İsmail Hakkı (American Institute of Aeronautics and Astronautics (AIAA), 2002-9)
The aerodynamic analysis of subsonic lifting body concepts for future unmanned air vehicles and missiles has been an active research held in recent years. A lifting body combines three emerging technologies, namely, lifting body, thrust vector control, and flush louvered inlet. The flush louvered inlet configuration requires the flow to turn 360 deg in the plenum chamber before entering the engine. The pressure losses and flow distortions experienced in the plenum chamber are serious concerns. In the analysi...
Unmanned Aerial Vehicle Domain: Areas of Research
Demir, Kadir Alpaslan; Cicibas, Halil; ARICA, NAFİZ (2015-07-01)
Unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) domain has seen rapid developments in recent years. As the number of UAVs increases and as the missions involving UAVs vary, new research issues surface. An overview of the existing research areas in the UAV domain has been presented including the nature of the work categorised under different groups. These research areas are divided into two main streams: Technological and operational research areas. The research areas in technology are divided into onboard and ground techno...
Aerodynamic and structural design and analysis of an electric powered mini UAV
Demircan, Alpay; Kayran, Altan; Department of Aerospace Engineering (2016)
The aim of this study is to describe the aerodynamic and structural design of an electric powered portable Mini UAV. Conceptual design, structural design and analysis of the wing and detail design phases of the UAV are presented in the study. Fixed wing mini UAV configuration with fixed – pitch propeller has been chosen for the design. In order to provide multi-mission capability, payload of the UAV is designed as a replaceable mission compartment. System requirements and mission profiles of the airplane ar...
Application of a Fixed-Wing Unmanned Aerial Vehicle (UAV) in Reforestation of Lebanon Cedar (Cedrus Libani A. Rich)
Şahin, Mustafa (null; 2011-03-16)
Studies and development of Unmanned Aerial Vehicles (UAVs) started shortly after the first controlled, powered, heavier-than-air human flight in 1903. UAVs have many advantages over piloted aircraft, such as minimizing human risk, flying economically, and flying for extended periods of time. Early UAVs were mostly developed for military purposes, but modern development encompasses both military and civilian uses and is now pursued worldwide. While UAVs serve a number of important civilian functions such as ...
Numerical and experimental analysis of a piezoelectric flat plate in flapping motion
Harputlu, Özgür; Kurtuluş, Dilek Funda; Department of Aerospace Engineering (2014)
The technology of unmanned aerial vehicles (UAV) has a rapid improvement and their use is increasing day by day for military and civilian missions. Developments in production technology enable the fabrication of micro aerial vehicles. Flapping wing systems have an important place among UAVs. These vehicles are superior to fixed wing aircrafts with their high maneuverability and hover capabilities and they can successfully perform many missions in which the fixed aircrafts are insufficient. Developments in m...
