The aim of this work is to examine and estimate the ultimate recovery from Turkey's largest oil reserve (1.85 billion barrels) utilizing a new approach called mining-assisted heavy oil production (MAHOP) and conventional steam injection horizontal production (CSHP) method. In MAHOP, declines (tunnels) are excavated from the surface to the reservoir and proceed along the reservoir's bottom. Fan-shaped steam injection holes are drilled from the upper and lower sides of the reservoir with conventional steam-assisted gravity drainage (SAGD). The suggested CSHP method uses conventional vertical wells as steam injectors and produces heated oil from newly drilled horizontal well pairs. To reach this goal, an experimental scaled model and a numerical model have been designed and developed. Laboratory studies have been carried on three different wettability environments to observe the effect of wettability on the ultimate recovery. The oil recovery obtained from MAHOP at different wettability environments varied with higher steam injection temperatures. The highest recovery (71.73%) was realized in water-wet rock. However, in the CSHP method, the maximum recovery was lower (48.11%). It was believed that the temperature altered the wettability of oil-wet rock to more water-wet, which contributed to incremental oil recovery. However, higher steam injection temperatures greater than 140 °C had no significant effect on incremental oil recovery. Furthermore, asphaltene precipitation, especially in the oil-wet system and alteration of wettability to more water-wet increased oil production.

This research aims to investigate and compare the ultimate recovery from the largest oil reserve in Turkey (1.85 billion barrels) using a new method called mining-assisted heavy oil production (MAHOP) with conventional SAGD. Tunnels will be excavated from the surface to the reservoir. Fan-shaped up holes will then be drilled in the reservoir from the tunnels.Heavy oil production through these tunnels will be explored using SAGD method. Several numerical models have been designed using CMG’s STARS simulator....
STABILITY AND FAILURE ANALYSIS OF EXCAVATIONS USED FOR UNDERGROUND MINING OF BATI RAMAN OIL FIELD
Emci, Mehmet Emircan; Öztürk, Hasan; Department of Mining Engineering (2021-11-8)
Batı Raman holds the Turkey's proven largest oil reserve (1.85 billion barrels). The reserve is located at an average depth of 1450 m within a fractured limestone. This heavy oil has a 12° API gravity and a viscosity of 200-2000 cp. A future plan for this reserve is to use a "mining assisted heavy oil production" method. The idea behind this method is to reach the reserve by a decline from the surface and continue opening up galleries beneath the reserve from which fan shape up holes will be drilled in the ...
Experimental and numerical investigation of mining assisted heavy oil production for the Bati Raman field, Turkey
Canbolat, Serhat; Öztürk, Hasan; Akın, Serhat (2023-01-01)
This research aims to investigate possible ultimate recovery from the largest oil reserve (Bati Raman) in Turkey using a new method called mining-assisted heavy oil production (MAHOP) where declines (tunnels) are excavated from the surface to the reservoir. A series of excavations (galleries) continue along the bottom of the reservoir and proceed along the reservoir's bottom. Fan-shaped steam injection holes that are drilled in the reservoir from the top and sides of the galleries are then used to inject st...
Optimization of CO₂ EOR and storage design under uncertainity
Bender, Serdar; Akın, Serhat; Department of Petroleum and Natural Gas Engineering (2016)
The combination of CO₂ enhanced oil recovery (EOR) and permanent CO₂ storage in mature oil reservoirs have the potential to provide a critical near-term solution for reducing greenhouse gas emissions. In the literature, although there are many studies about CO₂ storage and EOR, only a few studies have focused on maximizing both the oil recovery and the CO₂ storage. Moreover, these studies are either experimental or conducted using synthetic reservoir models. Typically, pure CO₂ has the property of mixing wi...
Evaluation and optimization of microbial oil production using synthetic sugars
Gürel, Nermin; Çekmecelioğlu, Deniz; Department of Food Engineering (2019)
Oleaginous microorganisms produce microbial oil that can be a solution to sustainable oil production. Lipomyces starkeyi DSM70295 and Rhodosporidium toruloides DSM4444 yeasts were chosen to produce microbial oil in this study. Synthetic sugars, glucose, galactose, xylose, fructose and 1:1(w/w) combinations of sugars with glucose were used in fermentation medium. Nitrogen is an important criterion for yeast growth and lipid accumulation. To test effects of nitrogen on yeast growth and lipid production, C/N ra...
