Upper mantle discontinuity structure beneath East Anatolian Plateau (Turkey) from receiver functions
Özacar, Atilla Arda; Zandt, George (2008-05-30)
Imaging of seismic velocity discontinuities with receiver functions suggests a complex mantle structure beneath the East Anatolian Plateau. By stacking all the receiver functions as a function of ray parameter, we examined the moveout characteristics of the data set and tested different velocity models to fit the arrival times of converted phases from the Moho and the lithosphere-asthenosphere boundary and their multiples. The best fitting model shows anomalously thin crust (40 km) and lithosphere (65 km), ...
Seismic images of crustal variations beneath the East Anatolian Plateau (Turkey) from teleseismic receiver functions
Özacar, Atilla Arda; Gilbert, Hersh; Beck, Susan L. (2010-12-01)
We used teleseismic P-wave receiver functions recorded by the Eastern Turkey Seismic Experiment to determine the crustal structure across an active continent-continent collision zone. Moho depth and V-p/V-s variations in the region are mapped by incorporating crustal multiples and later two-dimsional (2-D) seismic profiles are produced using a common conversion point technique with our crustal V-p/V-s estimates. Moho depths do not correlate with surface topography and reveal a relatively thin crust consiste...
Site-dependent spectra derived from ground motion records in Turkey
Kalkan, E; Gulkan, P (SAGE Publications, 2004-11-01)
The current spectral shapes in the Turkish Seismic Code (TSC) are based on broadly described geological conditions, ignoring fault distance or magnitude dependencies on spectral ordinates. To address this deficiency, a data set created from a suite of 112 strong ground motion records from 57 earthquakes that occurred between 1976 and 2003 has been used to develop horizontal attenuation relationships for Turkey. This way it is possible to construct hazard-consistent design spectra for any national seismic re...
Cross-sectional anatomy and geodynamic evolution of the Central Pontide orogenic belt (northern Turkey)
Hippolyte, JC; Espurt, Nikolas; Kaymakcı, Nuretdin; SANĞU, ERCAN; Mueller, C. (2016-01-01)
Geophysical data allowed the construction of a similar to 250-km-long lithospheric-scale balanced cross section of the southern Black Sea margin (Espurt et al. in Lithosphere 6:26-34, 2014). In this paper, we combine structural field data, stratigraphic data, and fault kinematics analyses with the 70-km-long onshore part of the section to reconstruct the geodynamic evolution of the Central Pontide orogen. These data reveal new aspects of the structural evolution of the Pontides since the Early Cretaceous. T...
Tsunami hydrodynamics in coastal zones
Özer, Ceren; Yalçıner, Ahmet Cevdet; Department of Civil Engineering (2012)
This study analyzes the parameter “hydrodynamic demand” that is also defined by the square of Froude Number representing the damage of tsunami waves on structures and coastlines, and other hydrodynamic parameters, i.e., the distribution of instantaneous flow depths, runup values and the direction of maximum currents, occurred during tsunami inundation by using advanced numerical modeling. The analyses are performed on regular-shaped basins with different bottom slopes and real-shaped topographies using diff...
