In Turkey, the use of RCC pavements is increasing in urban and rural roads. However, a detailed study examining the effect of RCC mixture parameters on the pavement surface properties that affect road driving comfort and safety is not available in literature. In this study, in order to cover that gap in literature 12 RCC mixtures prepared with different cement dosages, aggregate gradations and water amounts were compacted by "Superpave-Gyratory-Compactor" at different levels. Later, the surface characteristics were evaluated with British pendulum and sand patch tests. It was concluded that cement dosage, water content and gradation have an effect not only in terms of strength but also in terms of pavement surface properties, and recommendations were made for RCC mixture optimization.

Sezgin , Dinçer; Varol, Çiğdem (Middle East Technical University, Faculty of Architecture, 2012-6-1)
In Turkey, the pace of industrialization and the rapid increase of urban population cause cities and their hinterland to expand, thus some of the urban functions are located outside the urban settlement boundaries. The discontinuous and disjointed settlements lead to a new growth model in the metropolitan, namely the urban sprawl. This growth mainly affects and transforms the agricultural land around cities, which is a vital natural resource for the continuity of ecosystems, and thus, has to be used efficie...
Assessment of sound transmission characteristics of traditional timber framed dwellings in Ankara, Turkey
Erdil, Meltem; Tavukçuoğlu, Ayşe; Çalışkan, Mehmet; Department of Building Science in Architecture (2015)
Sound transmission characteristics of traditional timber dwellings in Turkey have become a serious issue due to the increase in complaints of residents about noise problems in those structures. There is a necessity to examine sound transmission problems in these dwellings with an emphasis on configuration of their timber frame components. Such a study is needed to suggest proper repair solutions to eliminate the existing sound transmission problems while keeping authentic features of those traditional struc...
Assessment of degradation mechanism and stability of a cut slope in jointed and sheared limestone along Ankara-Eskişehir E90 highway
Öztekin, Burak; Topal, Tamer; Department of Geological Engineering (2004)
Due to rapidly growing population of Ankara city (Turkey) and traffic load, it is required to widen some of the existing highways. One of them is Ankara-Eskisehir (E-90) highway that connects highly populated areas to the city center. During widening, several cut slopes were formed along the highway route. However, some instability problems such as small-sized rock falls and rock detachments have occurred along a cut slope in highly jointed, folded and sheared limestone. They caused local degradation of the...
The effects of local conservation capacity to the maintenance of historic city centers as a governance process : Gaziantep and Şanlıurfa case study area
Belge, Burak; Tuna, Numan; Department of Architecture (2012)
In Turkey, although there are many similar implemented or ongoing conservation interventions, some of historic city centers are in better condition than other ones in terms of urban conservation. Conservation discourse describes the conservation of historic city centers as a shared and sustaining responsibility of various actors. At that point, locality is essential because of near and directs relations with historic environment. However, there are basic problems to develop a synergy based on shared respons...
The relationship between squatter housing transformation and social integration of rural migrants into urban life: a case study in Dikmen
Kahraman, Z. Ezgi; Berkman, Gülden; Department of City and Regional Planning (2008)
Rural migration process resulted in both spatial and social problems in large Turkish cities. Squatter housing transformation constitutes the spatial dimension of the problem. On the other hand, rural migration has led to social problems such as non-integration, social exclusion and urban poverty of the migrant groups. This dissertation which believes the necessity of searching rural migration as a socio-spatial process attempts to explore the relationship between squatter housing transformation and social ...
