Spatial distribution of net diatoms along adjacent water masses of different origin
Uysal, Zahit (1996-01-01)
Larger diatoms (>55 µm) were sampled using closing bottles from on board the R/V Bilim along adjacent water masses of different origin in order to observe patchy assemblages of net diatoms. MDS (Multi-Dimensional Scaling) plots of diatoms in adjacent water masses inhabiting the south-western Black Sea, Bosphorus, Golden Horn, the north-eastern Sea of Marmara and Izmit Bay have shown that patchy configurations of diatom were orientated along particular dominating environmental gradients, mainly temperature a...
Spatial distribution of crystalline corrosion products formed during corrosion of stainless steel in concrete
Serdar, Marijana; Akgül, Çağla; Kunz, Martin; Bjegovic, Dubravka; Wenk, Hans-Rudolf; Monteiro, Paulo JM (2015-05-01)
The mineralogy and spatial distribution of nano-crystalline corrosion products that form in the steel/concrete interface were characterized using synchrotron X-ray micro-diffraction (mu-XRD). Two types of low-nickel high-chromium reinforcing steels embedded into mortar and exposed to NaCl solution were investigated. Corrosion in the samples was confirmed by electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS). mu-XRD revealed that goethite (alpha-FeOOH) and akaganeite (beta-FeOOH) are the main iron oxide-hydroxides...
Spatial distribution of light-emitting centers in Si-implanted SiO2
Serincan, U; Aygun, G; Turan, Raşit (Elsevier BV, 2005-06-01)
Light emission from Si-implanted SiO2 layer is a well-known phenomenon. We demonstrated that samples which were implanted with Si-28 at a dose of 1.5 x 10(17) cm(-2) at 100 keV and annealed at 1050 degrees C for 2h exhibit two broad photoluminescence (PL) peaks at similar to 650 and 850 nm. The origin of these peaks was investigated by a controlled etch experiment in order to figure out the dependence of the PL spectrum on the location of the implanted Si atoms. It was found that the emission peak of 850 nm...
Spatial variation of VOCs and inorganic pollutants in a university building
YURDAKUL, Sema; CİVAN, MİHRİBAN; ÖZDEN ÜZMEZ, ÖZLEM; Gaga, Eftade; DÖĞEROĞLU, TUNCAY; Tuncel, Süleyman Gürdal (2017-01-01)
Indoor concentrations of 34 volatile organic compounds (VOCs), sulfur dioxide (SO2), nitrogen dioxide (NO2) and ozone (O-3) were measured at 32 sampling points in classes, offices and hallways of the Environmental Engineering Department (ENVE) in the Middle East Technical University (METU) in Ankara. Outdoor samples were also collected around the department during the sampling campaigns. Two passive sampling campaigns, one in summer and the other one in winter, were conducted. Indoor concentrations of most ...
Spatial instability of a wall-bounded flow with fluid injection through porous walls
Köken, Ozan; Tarman, Hakan I.; Department of Mechanical Engineering (2019)
One of the important and yet least understood fields in fluid mechanics research more than a century is hydrodynamic stability. The main objectives in this field are to investigate the breakdown of laminar flows, their subsequent development as the flow evolves along downstream and eventual transition to the fully turbulent flows. The origin of the turbulence and the transition from laminar to turbulent flow is of crucial importance for the whole science of fluid mechanics as well as aviation and marine ind...
