The rising demand for low cost RF integrated circuits (RF-IC's) has resulted in tremendous interest in on-chip inductors. As a result of developing processing technology and the considerable studies on modeling and design, reasonable quality on-chip inductors have become available. Planar solenoidal inductors, bondwires and planar spiral inductors are three types of practical on-chip inductors of today's IC design technology. In this study, lumped element planar spiral inductor models have been compared with each other, with results of SPIRAL [1], and with experimental inductor measurement results.

Practical performance of planar spiral inductors
Telli, Ali; Demir, Şimşek; Aşkar, Murat (2004-12-01)
The inductors are essential elements for RF design. For RFIC design, bondwires, planar solenoidal and planar spiral inductors are available. Due to some limitations of bondwires and planar solenoidal inductors, planar spiral inductors are the most popular ones. The designers try to get accurate lumped element models for modeling planar spiral inductors to be able to simulate the circuit performance correctly before getting the integrated circuit manufactured. In this study, planar spiral inductors measureme...
Beam Steerable Traveling Wave Meander Line Antenna Using Varactor Diode for X-Band Applications
Gokalp, Nihan; Aydın Çivi, Hatice Özlem (2008-07-11)
This paper presents a novel beam steerable meander line antenna with varactor diode for X-band applications. Beam steering has been achieved by loading the arms of the meander line antenna with varactor diodes. The capacitances of the varactor diodes have been controlled by DC bias voltage. Instead of varactor diodes, RF-MEMS variable capacitances can be used to scan the beam. Since the insertion loss of MEMS capacitances are small compared to loss of varactor diodes, use of MEMS capacitors will increase th...
Beam Switching Reflectarray Monolithically Integrated With RF MEMS Switches
Bayraktar, Omer; Aydın Çivi, Hatice Özlem; Akın, Tayfun (2012-02-01)
A reflectarray antenna monolithically integrated with 90 RF MEMS switches has been designed and fabricated to achieve switching of the main beam. Aperture coupled microstrip patch antenna (ACMPA) elements are used to form a 10 x 10 element reconfigurable reflectarray antenna operating at 26.5 GHz. The change in the progressive phase shift between the elements is obtained by adjusting the length of the open ended transmission lines in the elements with the RF MEMS switches. The reconfigurable reflectarray is...
Optimum placement of high energy inductors for capacitive pulse power supplies
GÜNGEN, İBRAHİM; Bostancı, Emine; Department of Electrical and Electronics Engineering (2021-9)
Electromagnetic launcher (EML) systems convert electrical energy into mechanical energy. A large amount of energy must be supplied in a short time period to provide the necessary acceleration for the projectile. This type of energy is generally provided by capacitive pulsed power supplies (PPS). Many PPS units are connected in parallel to increase the total energy. Each module of a capacitive PPS includes high energy capacitor, shaping inductor, and semiconductors. The shaping inductors are air-core type in...
Design of a dual polarized low profile antenna for microwave brain imaging
Üçel, Kaan; Alatan, Lale; Department of Electrical and Electronics Engineering (2022-5-9)
In this thesis, a low profile, low cost, wide band (0.9-2GHz) dual linearly polarized printed dipole antenna is designed to be used in microwave brain imaging systems. Dual polarization feature offers superior data acquisition through polarization diversity for better image quality. Starting from a simple printed dipole, antenna structure is modified step by step to meet these design requirements. Since a conductive surface in close vicinity of the antenna affects antenna performance, in order to obtain uni...
