The inductors are essential elements for RF design. For RFIC design, bondwires, planar solenoidal and planar spiral inductors are available. Due to some limitations of bondwires and planar solenoidal inductors, planar spiral inductors are the most popular ones. The designers try to get accurate lumped element models for modeling planar spiral inductors to be able to simulate the circuit performance correctly before getting the integrated circuit manufactured. In this study, planar spiral inductors measurement methods have been discussed, and the comparison between lumped element model simulation results and experimental measurement results have been given. The results of this study show that it is possible to model planar spiral inductors with lumped element circuit models parameters of which can be calculated by basic but accurate expressions.

Planar spiral inductor modeling for RFIC design
Telli, A; Demir, Şimşek; Askar, MA (2003-01-01)
The rising demand for low cost RF integrated circuits (RF-IC's) has resulted in tremendous interest in on-chip inductors. As a result of developing processing technology and the considerable studies on modeling and design, reasonable quality on-chip inductors have become available. Planar solenoidal inductors, bondwires and planar spiral inductors are three types of practical on-chip inductors of today's IC design technology. In this study, lumped element planar spiral inductor models have been compared wit...
BROADBAND HIGH EFFICIENCY RF POWER AMPLIFIER DESIGN BASED ON MODIFIED CLASS-J APPROACH WITH APPLICATIONS USING GAN HEMT TECHNOLOGY
Koç, Murat; Demir, Şimşek; Department of Electrical and Electronics Engineering (2021-9-29)
RF power amplifiers have been the essential elements of any transmit/receive block. Especially in the transmit chain, some applications require high RF power, such as radar, jammer, telecommunication signals targeting a wide range of coverage. High power requirements in RF broadcast mean high supply power to feed RF PA. The efficiency parameter of a high-power transmission system becomes an issue due to heating problems and performance degradation depending on rising temperatures. The heating problem is com...
Theoretical investigation and design of wideband dielectric resonator antennas
Yüksel, Yılmaz Çağrı; Alatan, Lale; Department of Electrical and Electronics Engineering (2015)
The aim of this thesis is to utilize Dielectric Resonator Antennas (DRA) as array elements due to their advantages over other conventional antenna elements such as dipoles and microstrip patches. Depending on both the excitation mechanisms and the antenna shape, a Dielectric Resonator Antenna (DRA) provides its designer multiple independent degrees of freedom. In this thesis three antenna shapes, namely hemispherical, cylindrical and rectangular DRAs, are investigated. The cylindrical and the rectangular sh...
Design of a Re-configurable dual frequency microstrip antenna with integrated RF MEMS switches
Onat, Sinon; Ünlü, Mehmet; Alatan, Lale; Demir, Şimşek; Akın, Tayfun (2005-07-08)
The complete design of a re-configurable dual frequency antenna structure, including its integrated RF MEMS switches and their actuation lines together with a CPW feed, is introduced. The number of switches used in the inset is decreased compared to the hybrid design we presented previously (Onat, S. et al., IEEE Int. Antennas and Propag. Symp., vol.2, p.1812-15, 2004). Instead of utilizing available RF MEMS switches, new switches suitable for this application are designed. Two different switch configuratio...
DEVELOPMENT OF POLYMER MATRIX COMPOSITES WITH TUNABLE DIELECTRIC PROPERTIES
Özkaragöz, Nadire Nazlı; Dericioğlu, Arcan Fehmi; Department of Metallurgical and Materials Engineering (2022-2-08)
Ferroelectric materials are used in different applications because of their superior electrical and dielectric properties. Ferroelectric materials are polarized when an electrical field is applied to the material. This spontaneous polarization continues even if an electrical field is removed. BST (Barium Strontium Titanate) is one of the attractive ferroelectric materials which has a high dielectric constant and low dielectric loss tangent (tanδ). High dielectric constant and low loss tangent are necessary ...
