Catalytic reaction of propylene to propylene oxide on various catalysts
Kalyoncu, Şule; Önal, Işık; Şeker, Erol; Department of Chemical Engineering (2012)
Throughout this thesis work, various catalysts were investigated with combinational approach to develop highly active and selective novel catalysts for direct epoxidation of propylene to PO using molecular oxygen. The promoted and un-promoted silver (Ag), copper (Cu), ruthenium (Ru), manganese (Mn) mono and multimetallic catalytic systems over different silica supports were prepared via sol-gel method and incipient wetness method. In addition to support effect, the effects of different promoters on the cata...
Propylene epoxidation on CoO and Li promoted CoO catalysts: a density functional theory study
Gezer, Miray; Önal, Işık; Department of Chemical Engineering (2014)
Propylene oxide is a significant intermediate chemical which has many derivatives used as raw materials in many industries such as automobile, cosmetic, medicine etc. However, its current production methods, chlorohydrin process and hydroperoxide process, are not preferred since they are economically and environmentally disadvantageous. Considering these negative effects, heterogeneous catalyst for direct propylene epoxidation is still being investigated. With an objective of filling this catalyst gap in th...
Catalytic partial oxidation of propylene on metal surfaces by means of quantum chemical methods
Kızılkaya, Ali Can; Önal, Işık; Department of Chemical Engineering (2010)
Direct, gas phase propylene epoxidation reactions are carried out on model slabs representing Ru-Cu(111) bimetallic and Cu(111) metallic catalyst surfaces with periodic Density Functional Theory (DFT) calculations. Ru-Cu(111) surface is modelled as a Cu(111) monolayer totally covering the surface of Ru(0001) surface underneath. The catalytic activity is evaluated following the generally accepted oxametallacycle mechanism. It is shown that the Ru-Cu(111) surface has a lower energy barrier (0.48 eV) for the s...

Survival of probiotic microorganisms during storage after marketing
Köse, Işkın; Gültekin, Güzin Candan; Cebeci Aydın, Aysun; Department of Biotechnology (2011)
Probiotics are viable microorganisms that show beneficial effects on the health of the host by improving their intestinal microflora. The microorganisms applied as probiotics mainly include Lactobacillus and Bifidobacterium species. Probiotics can inhibit the bacterial pathogens, reduce serum cholesterol levels, improve lactose tolerance and stimulate the immune response. They also have other properties such as; tolerance to acid and bile salts, adherence to gastrointestinal cells for colonization, resistan...
