Ozonation of sewage sludge prior to single-stage anaerobic digestion (SAD) has been reported to increase biogas and/or methane production. However, no studies have evaluated the impact of ozone pre-treatment on two-stage anaerobic digestion (TAD) of sewage sludge over the production of these renewable fuels. Present study, therefore, aimed at investigating the impact of 0.06 g O3/g TSS ozone-pretreated sewage sludge on the productivity of mesophilic semi-batch lab-scale TAD and on its methanogenic consortium. For this purpose, a TAD configuration was constructed by two reactors connected in series to perform acidogenic and methanogenic phases separately. Measurements of methane, biogas and quantification of microbial consortiums were done by gas chromatography, water displacement and fluorescence in situ hybridization techniques, respectively. The ozone pretreatment results highlighted average daily solid removals between 51 and 64%. Ozonation of sewage sludge prior to TAD also yielded 69 and 38% more methane and biogas, respectively. This increase accounted for the predominance shift from strictly hydrogenotrophic to acetotrophic methanogens in the ozonated TAD.

Investigation of biogas production potential of three different sludges after thermal hydrolysis
Arı Akdemir, Ece.; Sanin, F. Dilek.; Department of Environmental Engineering (2019)
Biogas production through anaerobic digestion using biological sludge is one the sustainable approaches. Hydrolysis is the first and rate limiting step during anaerobic digestion. For enhancement of hydrolysis of sludge, it is feasible to investigate pre-treatment before anaerobic digestion process. In this research, biogas and methane production potentials of municipal wastewater treatment plants sludge, membrane bioreactor sludge and organized industrial district sludge were investigated using small scale...
Behavior of sulfate-reducing bacteria in single-stage anaerobic digesters pretreated with ozone
Tuncay, Sera; Akcakaya, Merve; İçgen, Bülent (null; 2019-10-28)
Anaerobic digestion is a solid stabilization process commonly used at both municipal and industrial wastewater and sludge treatment. Anaerobic digesters convert the microbiological cells and other solids generated during the treatment process to a stable end product and also produce methane-rich biogas as an energy source through the degradation of organic matter. Microbial population dynamics involved in anaerobic digestion are not well-studied yet due to the requirement of an extensive investigation of mi...
Combination of alkaline solubilization with microwave digestion as a sludge disintegration method: effect on gas production and quantity and dewaterability of anaerobically digested sludge
Doğan, Ilgın; Sanin, Faika Dilek; Department of Environmental Engineering (2008)
The significant increase in the sewage sludge production in treatment plants makes anaerobic digestion more important as a stabilization process. However hydrolysis is the rate-limiting step of anaerobic digestion because of the semirigid structure of the microbial cells. Pretreatment of waste activated sludge (WAS) leads to disruption of cell walls and release of extracellular and intracellular materials. Therefore biodegradability of sludge will be improved in terms of more biogas production and sludge mi...
EFFECT OF PRETREATMENTS ON THE SEMICONTINUOUS ANAEROBIC-DIGESTION OF SUNFLOWER HEADS
POLAT, H; Selçuk, Nevin; SOYUPAK, S (1992-10-01)
The effects of hydraulic retention time and alkali treatment on methane production rate from the semicontinuous anaerobic digestion of 2 % sunflower-head/water mixtures were investigated. The experiments were carried out in laboratory-scale fermenters, fed with 1 liter of untreated, 2 g NaOH/100 g total solids (TS), and 5 g NaOH/100 g TS alkali-treated sunflower-head/water mixtures, respectively, and maintained at 55-degrees-C Digestion experiments were performed for hydraulic retention times of 8, 10, and ...
Ozonation of sewage sludge prior to anaerobic digestion led to Methanosaeta dominated biomethanation
Tuncay, Sera; Akcakaya, Merve; İçgen, Bülent (2021-01-01)
Anaerobic digestion (AD) of sewage sludge is commonly employed for sludge stabilization and energy generation at wastewater treatment plants. Of pretreatment techniques used to accelerate rate-limiting hydrolysis step in AD, economically feasible ozonation is prevalent and permits sludge reduction via oxidation. The stability of AD process during ozonation is crucial for successful energy recovery and needs optimal dosage that encourages methanogenic consortium efficient in methane production. This study, t...
