Many alternative approaches that conceptualize the dialogue between the architectural objects and their site have come to the fore throughout history. The language of the contemporary architecture reflects this conceptual richness in the site’s narrative. This study aims to make the diversity in the language visible by examining the discussions regarding the term site and eleven related concepts (place, settlement, local, topography, context, environment, nature, history, social, culture, and identity) in the contemporary architectural discourse of Turkey. In doing so, this study closely looks at the language used by the articles published between 1990-2020 in the Mimarlık Journal, which the Chamber of Architects has published since 1963. By making the digital scanning and mapping of the concepts related to the site, this study makes inferences about the site-related concept discussions, by whom they are discussed, and which thought systems they refer.

Diagrammatic potency of the "nine square grid" in architectural design
Kalfazade, Nihat; Gür, Berin Fatma; Department of Architecture (2004)
The aim of this thesis is to search for the diagrammatic potency of the أnine square gridؤ (9SG) in architectural design. The thesis refers to the diagram as a tool for bringing order to the essential elements of architecture (i.e. program, structure and context). It highlights the potential relationships among these elements. In this study, the 9SG is approached as a diagram that has the potential to generate different spatial relations. The thesis investigates different uses of the 9SG in reference to the...
Architecture and public dialogue : an evaluation of the role of architecture centers
Demirel, Buket; Erkılıç, Mualla; Department of Architecture (2005)
This thesis points out the transformation in the visions of architectural institutions about architecture-public dialogue, the interrelations of architect-client to architecture-the public, in a historical perspective. It states that architecture center as a phenomenon has been emerged with the transformation of the consideration of the functions of architectural institutions from merely guaranteeing competence and integrity to stimulating awareness, accessibility, participation and collaboration of both pr...
Complexity management and mutability in architectural form conception: form-blindness and softform
Kızılcan, Egemen Berker; Mennan, Zeynep; Department of Architecture (2015)
Expressions in architecture, as modes of conveying information, have the power to shape perception and thinking, as well as architectural production. Architectural conception is today induced by custom information models with the advent of technologies and methodologies associated with the computational paradigm and therefore are capable of inhabiting complex orders that arise from a multiplicity of concerns. Architecture is no longer constituted by the fixity of a single instance of form, instead possibili...
Transformation of architectural space with the aid of artistic production
Özden, Başak; Savaş Sargın, Ayşen; Department of Architecture (2011)
The goal of this thesis is to study the transformation of architectural space with the aid of artistic production. By questioning architectural production as a non-static process open to alteration and intervention, this condition is claimed to enlarge the frontiers of architecture in terms of interdisciplinary contributions and new design methods. Inspired by the course ARCH 524, conducted by Assoc. Prof. Dr. Ayşen Savaş in the METU Department of Architecture, this study aims to understand the possible way...
