Mapping of the site-related concepts in architecture: a study on the Mimarlık journal (1990-2020)

Many alternative approaches that conceptualize the dialogue between the architectural objects and their site have come to the fore throughout history. The language of the contemporary architecture reflects this conceptual richness in the site’s narrative. This study aims to make the diversity in the language visible by examining the discussions regarding the term site and eleven related concepts (place, settlement, local, topography, context, environment, nature, history, social, culture, and identity) in the contemporary architectural discourse of Turkey. In doing so, this study closely looks at the language used by the articles published between 1990-2020 in the Mimarlık Journal, which the Chamber of Architects has published since 1963. By making the digital scanning and mapping of the concepts related to the site, this study makes inferences about the site-related concept discussions, by whom they are discussed, and which thought systems they refer.

Being a cultural critic, Mumford's translation of the geographical and political notion of Regionalism into architecture is interesting, because, although his intellectual position represents the socio-political and intellectual spirit of his age, there are similarities between the mental habits of that period and of the present in the i...

Most of the towns are the outcome of a continual historical development process, reflected as the existence of components of different layers in the contemporary urban space. Life and experiences of the inhabitants take place in this multilayered urban space. Hence, the existing urban space keeps history and personal stories alive. This coherence constitutes a relation between memories in minds of people and traces in their physical environment. The mnemonic effect of physical environment leads to identity,...
