Bridges are among the most important cost items of transportation projects in Turkey and in the world. In bridge engineering, superstructures are designed with optimization through years of experience. However, the same is not true for infrastructre elements such as piers. The evaluation of the bridge piers, built in Turkey and around the world, considering structural design shows that they are "overdesign" elements suitable for optimization. The ratio of the cost of the piers to the total bridge cost is around 10-15%. Bridge piers are generally built with reinforced concrete similar to other infrastructure. An economical design is obtained using trial and error method: the most economical design in question is a work that requires a lot of time. In this thesis, it is shown that a more economical design of standard highway bridge columns is possible quickly with the prepared bridge column optimization tool. For this tool, 14630 different reinforced concrete column sections were collected in the dataset. The loads acting on the bridge columns, displacement demands and various bridge parameters are given by the user as input to the program, and under these demands, the most economical column in the dataset is determined. Within the scope of the study, 11 actual bridges were examined and more economical columns were designed with the proposed optimization tool.

SEISMIC RETROFIT OF OLD BRIDGES WITH SEISMIC ISOLATION
Caner, Alp; Shaban, Nefize (null; 2017-01-05)
A standard highway bridge has usually multi simple spans supported over piers by elastomeric bearings in Turkey. The bearings usually do not provide a positive connection but in contact with girder and pier by only gravitational forces. In this study, a model test bridge of about ½ scale have been shaken under low to moderate earth quakes to determine the change in response of the bridge with different seismic isolation configurations. Three configurations of bearings are elastomeric bearings, lead core bea...
Reliability based safety level evaluation of Turkish type precast prestressed concrete bridge girders designed in accordance with the load and resistance factor design method
Argınhan, Oktay; Caner, Alp; Yücemen, Mehmet Semih; Department of Civil Engineering (2010)
The main aim of the present study is to evaluate the safety level of Turkish type precast prestressed concrete bridge girders designed according to American Association of State Highway and Transportation Officials Load and Resistance Factor Design (AASHTO LRFD) based on reliability theory. Span lengths varying from 25 m to 40 m are considered. Two types of design truck loading models are taken into account: H30S24-current design live load of Turkey and HL93-design live load model of AASHTO LRFD. The statis...
Improvement of computational software for composite curved bridge analysis
Kalaycı, Ahmet Serhat; Topkaya, Cem; Department of Civil Engineering (2005)
In highway bridge construction, composite curved girder bridges are becoming more popular recently. Reduced construction time, long span coverage, economics and aesthetics make them more popular than the other structural systems. Although there exist some methods for the analysis of such systems, each have shortcomings. The use of Finite Element Method (FEM) among these methods is limited except in the academic environments. The use of commercial FEM software packages in the analysis of such systems is cumb...
Design of cast-in-place balanced cantilever bridges in Turkey
Caner, Alp (null; 2010-01-01)
The cast-in-place balanced cantilever bridges are becoming popular in Turkey. Most of the highway bridges are designed using a modified version of the AASHTO bridge specifications. Differences in US design practice and Turkish design practice will be summarized in this paper. The differences are usually observed in design loads and in selection of concrete material properties. The static and dynamic analysis of bridges including construction staging is similar to the ones in USA. A case study is presented a...
Dynamic investigation and rehabilitation of existing railway truss bridge under high speed train loadings for passenger comfort
Mutlu, Gündüz; Yılmaz, Çetin; Department of Civil Engineering (2008)
In Turkey, big investments are made to improve the existing train lines for use of new high speed trains. Most of the bridges on the existing train lines are typical and in this thesis one of the standard types, the classic steel truss bridge is investigated. This thesis presents the dynamic investigation of standard type existing truss bridge for passenger comfort criteria under the high speed train loadings. Two different computational analysis models have been developed to idealize the vehicle-bridge mod...
