Liquid crystal-templated synthesis of polymeric microparticles with complex nanostructures
Akdeniz, Burak; Büküşoğlu, Emre; Department of Chemical Engineering (2019)
Liquid crystals (LC), when combined with photolithography, enable synthesis of microparticles with two- and three-dimensional shapes and internal complexities. We prepared films of nematic LCs using mixtures of reactive (RM257) and non-reactive mesogens (E7) with controlled alignment of LCs at the confining surfaces, photopolymerized the RM257 using a photomask, and then extracted the unreacted mesogens to yield polymeric microparticles. The extraction resulted in a controlled anisotropic shrinkage with an ...
Liquid crystal alignment on the patterns produced by nonlinear laser lithography
Pavlov, Ihor; Dobrovolskiy, Andriy; Kazantseva, Zoya; Bek, Alpan; Gvozdovskyy, Igor (2019-06-01)
Liquid crystal (LC) based devices such as displays, spatial light modulators (SLM) and different switchable phase masks constitute the main part of the graphic information display and light control. Mechanical rubbing and photo-alignment are the most widely used industrial technologies to create anisotropic surfaces for these devices. Recently, nonlinear laser lithography (NLL) was introduced as a fast, cost effective method for large area nano-grating fabrication based on laser-induced periodic surface str...

Liquid Crystal-Templated Synthesis of Anisotropic Ultrafiltration Membranes
Karausta, Aslı; Büküşoğlu, Emre (2018-08-30)
In this study, we developed a method that provides determination ofthe internal structure of the polymeric films by using LCs as template. For thesynthesis of the material, we photopolymerized the mixture of reactive(4-(3-acryloyoxypropyloxy) benzoic acid 2-methyl-1,4-phenylene ester (RM257))and non-reactive (4-cyano-4′-pentylbiphenyl (5CB)) mesogens confined in filmgeometries with thickness of 20-200 µm, and then extracted nonreactive mesogenswith solvent to yield polymeric films of area in the order of 10...
