Improving effective strategies to control acid mine drainage (AMD) in abandoned mine areas is a significant challenge because of water quality issues. AMD is a serious water pollution problem. The water in the area where the mine is located acquires an acidic character, the pH level of the environment decreases, the concentration of heavy metals increases with their dissolution in the acidic environment, and can cause serious environmental pollution by creating a toxic effect for all living things. However, acidic characteristics are not observed in the waters at high pH levels; a basic environment is formed; the heavy metal dissolution slows down; and the precipitation of minerals begins. In such an environment, it is not possible to observe AMD formation and heavy metal pollution. If AMD source is characterized, the most effective strategies can be developed to control the acidic effluents. The main aim of this work was to investigate the potential impact of Ovacik abandoned, coal mine (Cankiri, Turkey) on the water quality in the areas around the mine. Water samples were collected along the open pit area (abandoned), dump sites and coal storage area. Effluent characterizations were investigated for the better evaluation of the water contamination level to develop the successful treatment strategies. In the studies conducted in the same field in 2010-2011, it was determined that the water pH changes between 6.64 and 8.13. Similarly, in this study, the results showed that the pH values of water streams in the abandoned mine were measured between 7.28 and 8.94 with no heavy metal contamination. Although the coal deposit exhibits AMD source minerals, the rock formations which have alkaline content prevented AMD in the considered site.

The determination of fertilizer quality of the formed struvite from effluent of a sewage sludge anaerobic digester
UYSAL, Ayla; Yılmazel Tokel, Yasemin Dilşad; DEMİRER, GÖKSEL NİYAZİ (2010-09-15)
The formation of struvite (MgNH4PO4 center dot 6H(2)O) in wastewater treatment plants can lead to scaling and thus operational problems reducing the treatment efficiency. However, struvite has significant commercial value as an agricultural fertilizer. Therefore, controlled struvite formation in wastewater treatment plants not only presents an opportunity to recover nutrients but also corresponds to the valorization of wastes. NH4-N and PO4-P removal and recovery from the effluent of a full-scale sewage slu...
Effects of drying on Atterberg limits of pyroclastic soils of Northern Turkey
Huvaj Sarıhan, Nejan (2018-09-15)
In this study, the effects of drying on Atterberg limits is investigated using 30 soil samples taken from 0.2 m to 4 m depths, from nine different landslide sites in pyroclastic deposits in Northern Turkey. Samples for Atterberg limits are prepared by (i) starting from in-situ moisture content without any drying, (ii) drying at 60 degrees C and (iii) drying at 110 degrees C. The range of liquid limit values is 35%-103% and plasticity index is 0%-37% when samples are prepared from their in-situ moisture cont...
Prediction techniques of acid mine drainage: a case study of a new poly- metallic mine development in Erzincan-Iliç, Turkey
Sezer Özçelik, Ganime Aslı; Günal Türkmenoğlu, Asuman; Department of Geological Engineering (2007)
Acid Mine Drainage (AMD) is an environmental problem that eventually occurs in sulfide rich mine sites. In Turkey most of the metal mines are associated with sulphide minerals and are potential AMD generators. The purpose of this PhD thesis is to practice universally accepted tools for the prediction of AMD potential for a new metallic mine development. This study involves evaluation of geological data, geochemistry, mineralogy, and acid-base accounting (static tests) data, obtained from the Erzincan-İliç Ç...
Effect of drainage properties on seepage behavior of earth fill dams
Çalamak, Melih; Yanmaz, Ali Melih (2016-09-23)
Earth-fill dams should be designed in such a way that excessive pore water pressures and seepage are controlled for attaining the desired safety level. This type of dams can be supplemented by some drainage facilities, such as blanket and chimney drains, which are commonly composed of graded soils. The key issue in designing a drainage facility is to promote the effectiveness of the system in reducing the pore water pressures and the seepage quantity. The performance of the drainage facility is based on its...
Use of calcium alginate as a coagulant in water treatment
Çoruh, Hale Aylin; Sanin, Faika Dilek; Department of Environmental Engineering (2005)
Coagulation and flocculation processes are important parts of water and wastewater treatment. Coagulation or destabilization of colloidal suspensions results in aggregation of colloidal particles by physical and chemical processes. Flocculation results in the formation of larger and settleable structures by bridging. Alginate, a polysaccharide obtained from marine brown algae, produces a gel structure when mixed with calcium ions, which is expected to be a potential coagulant in water treatment. This study ...
